Literature Level: Kindergarten Objectives: -The students will be able to recall sight words when see in text. -The students will be able to use sight words within complete sentences. -The students will have an understanding of the sight words and incorporate the words into pictures. Common Core Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.1.E Use the most frequently occurring prepositions (e.g., to, from, in, out, on, off, for, of, by, with). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.1.F Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Motivational Techniques: Students will be rewarded with a sticker for every sight card answered correctly. Resources and Materials: sight word journal book Digital sight word cards pencil and crayons chart paper with sight words chart paper the draw picture and write story Procedure: 1. The activity will take place during circle time. 2. At the beginning of the class, I will ask the students, "Who remembers what sight words are?" I will ask if anyone remembers any of our previously learned sight words. 3. I will then explain that, "Today we are going to review our sight words and learn new ones. We are going to sit in circle and use our Quizlet flashcards. Our friends who answer correctly will receive a sticker. 4. The students will be called to the carpet in an orderly fashion based on who was sitting and listening the best during instructions. Students are to bring sight word journal and pencil (2 minutes)
5. First review the previously learned sight words with the students before moving to the cards (10 minutes) 6. The digital sight word flashcards (http://quizlet.com/49382210/sight-words-flash- cards/) will be displayed on either a projector or an IPad. 7. Model to the students how the digital sight cards work. The digital sight word cards will have the sight word displayed with one letter of the word missing. For example, c_t and an illustration of a cat will be shown (5 minutes) 8. The student will have three chances to pick the letter that completes the word. Students will be rewarded with a sticker for every card completed correctly (25 minutes) 9. The flashcards will also contain sight words such as on, like, who, etc. that students will have to identify. 10. Students will record any new sight words into their sight word journals as well as the teacher recording the new sight words on big paper. 11. Once every student has successfully completed two digital sight word cards they will be dismissed to their seats one at a time according to who behaved the best during circle (2 minutes) 12. To show their comprehension, he students will then write a sentence using the new sight words and draw an illustration if applicable (20 minutes) 13. Once everyone has completed the sentences and drawings, the class will return to the carpet 14. Students will be called to the carpet according to what they are wearing i.e. Everyone wearing blue please come to the carpet (2 minutes) 15. As a class, the students will created a teacher directed story that incorporates the new learned sight words (20 minutes) 16. Using Animoto the teacher will create a digital story of the sight word story and it will be read for story time the next day. Academic Language: Identify, utilize, illustrate, review, and apply Assessment Method: Type of Assessment Class Participation Sight Word Journal Informal Did the student participate in circle and answer two flashcards? When it was not his or her turn, was the student respectful of other classmates? Did the student understand the activity? Did the student record the new sight words? Did the student make a sentence for each sight word? Did the student draw a picture for each sight word that was applicable for a drawing?
