Local Concert Comparisons

Teacher Candidate: Amy White Date: September 18, 2014

Grade and Topic: 9-12, Intermediate / Advanced ESL Length of Lesson: Two 50-minute classes
Mentor Teacher: Peggy Barber Murdock and Marla Phillips School: University of Memphis IDT 7061

Unit Objective
This Local Concert Comparison lesson is part of a unit covering music and festivals from around the
world. In conjunction with studying about traditions around the world, students have the opportunity to
explore musical performances in their own city. Cultural awareness requires understanding traditions
and cultural experiences in the town where you live. In addition, measuring distance on a map is a skill
important to Social Studies content. Communicating for the purposes of social interactions and in the
content area of Social Studies are Standards 1 and 5 in the WIDA English Language Development
Standards.

Lesson Objective
Content Learning Goals and Objectives
Given internet access, students will research and record information for local concerts during an
upcoming week (including two weekends).
Students will use an online map (such as Google maps) do determine the distance from their home to the
venue.
Students will transfer information to a spreadsheet giving specific information for 10 local concerts.

Student Participation
The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate the ability to research information pertaining to daily life
online. Students will display the results of their search in a spreadsheet.

Problem Statement
Your cousins are coming to visit you for the upcoming Fall Break, and they are excited about all the good music
in Memphis. Theyve asked you to find a concert that is nearby and inexpensive to go to. Make a chart ito show
your cousins 10 concert options during the Fall Break. Include the following: Performer(s), Date, Concert Start
Time, Venue, Ticket Price, and Distance in miles from your house. Be ready to make suggestions to your
cousins about the best concert for their vacation!

Standards

WIDA ELD Standards (adopted by the state of Tennessee beginning the 2014-2015 school year)
Standard 1: English language learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the
school setting.
Standard 5: English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for
academic success in the content area of Social Studies.

ISTE Standard(s)

3c. Research and information fluency: Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools
based on the appropriateness to specific tasks
4c. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making: Collect and analyze data to identify
solutions and/or make informed decisions
6. Technology operations and concepts: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology
concepts, systems, and operations

Materials

Materials Used

1. Data sheet and Think sheet provided by teacher
2. Computer with internet access to:
a. Google maps: maps.google.com (or similar website)
b. Eventful: http://memphis.eventful.com/ (or similar site with information related to local
concerts)
3. Teacher computer and projector
4. Microsoft Excel (or similar spreadsheet program)

Technology Integration

Students will use the websites above as resources for the spreadsheet showing concert details. Excel processing
software will be used to create a spreadsheet that compares concert options.

Background and Rationale

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of navigating and comprehending an American event
website and a mapping/navigation website.
Academic language is regularly addresses in ESL classes by focusing on transition words and
directions/commands. This lesson also includes academic language related to internet and spreadsheet
usage.
Students have already established a solid vocabulary related to concerts (venue, price, distance, etc.).
Students have discussed and read about music and concerts in other countries and will expand on that by
learning what is available in their own city.
Subsequent lessons will require students to use the information from their Concert Chart to create role-
plays and ultimately choose which concert is the best for a given situation.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.

Procedures and Timeline
Introduction (5 min.)

Begin by discussing what students will do over the upcoming Fall Break. Show a poster or flyer for a
future local concert.
Ask students how they decide what activities they will do in their free time.
Expand and talk about what events they would want to show visiting cousins (or friends their age).

Procedures
Day 1 (25 - 30 min.): After the introduction distribute the Data Sheet for students and model the steps
for accessing the websites and looking for concert details. Students complete the Data Sheet except for
the Distance section.
Day 1 (5 10 min.): Students begin to calculate the distance from their home to the concert venue and
record it on their Data Sheet.
Day 1 Closure: In groups or as a class students discuss some of the concerts they found.
Day 2 (20 min.): This class will be spent creating an Excel spreadsheet and populating it with
information from the Data Sheet.
Students should order the spreadsheet by date of concert after entering all data.
Students should create a line graph showing the Distance and Date.
Day 2 (15-20 min): Students complete the Think Sheet
Day 2 Closure: Students discuss which concerts are closest to their house, the most expensive, on
weekends, etc.

Think Sheet
Think questions?
1. What performance is the most expensive?
2. Which venue is the farthest away?
3. Which concert has the most advantages? Explain.
4. Which concert is the most expensive?
5. Which concert is the soonest?
6. Which concert is the farthest away?
