Application for the Family Medicine Residency Programme

Eligibility to apply
o House officers / Medical officers
o Graduating Seniors
Phase V students in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine
Year 4 students in the Duke-NUS Medical School
Final year medical students in international schools
Application done together with the applications of all other specialties during the residency
matching exercise organized by MOHH

About the Residency Programme

General Timeline
o Although application can be made by final year medical students, the 3 years of
training commences after completion of the first year of work as a houseman (Post
Graduate Year 1 PGY1) when official registration of the applicants medical license
has been granted by the Ministry of Health / Singapore Medical Council (i.e. official
start of R1 is in PGY2)

Exit Requirements after 3 years of Family Medicine Residency Programme (regardless of institution)

FM residents are required to complete the examination requirement in the Master of Medicine
(Family Medicine) MMed (FM) Examination so as to be accredited for independent practice as a
Specialist in Family Medicine in Singapore by the Singapore Medical Council.

FM Residents must also pass the examination before being considered for promotion to Registrar

The examination is conducted by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies, NUS and consists of:
Part 1: Theory
o American Board of Medical Specialties ABMS MCQs (organized by MOH, refer to this
site for more information)
Part 2: Clinicals (candidates must pass Part 1 in order to proceed to Part 2)
o Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that includes:
a) Slides-based OSCE stations
b) Oral Examination station
c) Clinical OSCE stations
