McWhorter Texting isnt writing Speech then writing We speak in packets of 7-10 words People sometimes write like they speak LOL is a marker of empathy New texts between youth change over time
I dont know if I would say that texting is hurting language, but I dont think its helping it. But, texting is definitely changing language. How certain words are used and how often a word comes up shows us that our language is structurally changing. When McWhorter mentioned going forward in time to see how youth spoke. It would show how the language has differed over time. I dont believe that texting is hurting language either. I think that as time change, so do many other things, including language. I also agree with the statement about going forward to see how youth spoke would definitely show how language has differed over time. Where will texting go in the future? Will it continue to evolve? Or will it die out and something else replace it? Erard When the author left Facebook, it was abrupt and sudden. He wrote how east it was to leave Facebook, not having to deal with goodbyes and also how easy it was to return to it. Major thesis was about how Facebook changed his relationships with friends, family, etc. Likened leaving Facebook to leaving a party. I agree with the authors stance. While the only reason I still have one is to keep in touch with my friends I dont see anymore, the temptation to just be done with it is tempting. I have gotten to know a few people better by using Facebook. I keep in touch with my German exchange student over Facebook. I agree that it is a great way to keep in touch with old friends but at the same time can be too much. Some thing should be personal and not shared, and many people dont know where to draw the line on the info they share. Will Facebook continue to be left behind in social media? Was the author annoyed with the lack of online communication between him and his friends on Facebook after he quit? Is this why Facebook is still surviving, because people cant stand to be out of touch? Moor Garb of 21 st century workers are much different than the media portrays it People buy outdoor gear but never put it to good use NatGeo and Discovery Channel have shows that misleads viewers about the wild To show their ruggedness, tough guys go to extreme lengths to show they are outdoorsy I agree with the majority of this article. The comparison between blue collar and white collar outdoorsmen portrayed well how each side put their equipment to use. Also the false belief by TV viewers that a survivor like Man vs. Wild can come out of a situation unscathed is common, which its not. I agree the TV shows are false but still pretty fun to watch. The shows can still pretty informational also. -Moiz The authors sequence was outdoor fashion, fake survivalist shows, health nuts, going to camp then being a counselor, which was his personal anecdote. Langdale The immigration process in the US is flawed. Earning citizenship can take up to 28 years. The visa lottery system is an unsafe method Studies have shown that immigrants have a much smaller impact in American workers than many believe Getting in on a student visa is hard enough, even harder with higher tuition and getting a safe job I think there should be a more improved system of letting immigrants in. even though the fianc visa is a hard way to get into the country and rushes the marriage, I believe its more financially safe than a student visa. I dont understand why we wouldnt let in an Ivy League educated, successful entrepreneur stay in the US. I agree that students should be able to stay in the country for work opportunities. But people who apply for visas are hard working, but if we grant citizenship to all immigrants who apply, then we would have a huge population crisis to deal with. -Taylor Kinmann How should the US reform the system to make it fair to all immigrants who apply? Should a fianc visa be an easier to get in on rather than a student visa? Lawson and Doll Overall purpose is to dispel Hollywood myths about romance Starts main beginning points of paragraphs in bold Covers a broad list of unlikely situations that Hollywood shows Exposes well that romantic popular culture isnt as realistic as Hollywood makes it. The article almost sounds satirical in a way. I agreed with most of the points made in this article. I agree with points of your notes and thoughts. I think it is interesting how negative he is throughout the passage. Like you said, he used not and will not a lot -Adam Walsh Will Hollywood continue to support these romantic fallacies? Will there be a movie that purposely dispels these myths? Dunn Flies can actually be beneficial to us They have adapted from horse poop to our garbage to dog poop to landfills Individual flies have traveled up to 10 miles.
Bennet Virtual relationships makes dating more appealing In online games, the social/dating aspect is still very important If youre antisocial, you dont have to see each other, just IM Many questions arise if its okay to cheat on your online relationship Talk shows have changed from a personal touch to getting online feedback over twitter Hosts have had to change their persona and tactics because of a lack of audience No longer camaraderie among audience and host
I dont count virtual dating as real dating but you should treat your partner the same as your real life partner. I dont think cheating in an online relationship should be illegal.
I believe that online dating should be considered cheating because you have a relationship with someone else. The emotional connection of an online relationship is cheating. Will these virtual relationships continue to strive or will they grow extinct over time? Will online games begin to add dating components to them?
Ray, Begley S Alan Ray discusses the benefits of having a more sexually orienated diverse college community, and why LGBT applicants should receive scholarships. Purpose: connecting underrepresented students with valuable resources on campus. Their admissions office doesnt think applicants will lie about their orientation to get in Chatzky We prefer current consumption to future consumption. Neuroscientists are able to rev up the saving part of the brain to disable to spending part of the brain When given a choice, patients choose current consumption. I think its important to have a diverse campus, and Elmhurst figured out how to do just that. But I do disagree about the scholarships given to the LGBT applicants. I think it is great that these minorities can get into these colleges, but they have far more preferential treatment than they would otherwise get at other colleges. I agree, I do not think that Elmhurst should have given the LGBT applicants opportunities for scholarships. They should be given the opportunity get in but not if they lie. -Sangeeta Is being materialistic bad? Is how you were raised correlate to how you behave now? Should scholarships be rewarded to whoever because its private money?
