Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 6
th
Grade Math

Common Core Math State Standards:
*Number Sense 2.3: Understand and solve problems with positive and negative
integers.

ISTE Standards:
*Creativity and Innovation: a) Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas,
products, or processes.

*Research and Information Fluency: c) Evaluate and select information sources
and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

*Communication and Collaboration: d) Contribute to project teams to produce
original works or solve problems.

Learning Objective:
*Students will be able to conceptually learn how to add integers using a number
line and by drawing out positive and negative signs by viewing the Flipped
Classroom Video Lessons.

*Students will analyze their work and discover a pattern and generate a rule for
adding integers.

*Students will demonstrate their understanding and share their ideas by adding a
sticky note on our Wall of Knowledge through Padlet.

Materials/Resources/Technology:
! 30 Chrome books (Check out the Chrome book cart)
! 30 Mice for Chrome books
! Access to Internet (Wireless Internet)
! Assessment Rubric
Math notebook

Lesson Plan Outline:
The two flipped videos created will be assigned for homework. Students will be
asked to view the two short videos and take notes on each different method used to
add integers. The first video will demonstrate conceptually how to add integers
using a number line and the second video will demonstrate how to add integers by
conceptually drawing out positive and negative signs. Through the exploration of
learning, students will collaborate and work together on practice problems in class,
and will further their understanding by analyzing their work and discovering a
pattern. The students will engage in The Lines of Communication Activity and
will be able to share their ideas and generate a rule on how to add integers.

This is a great way to show students that there are multiple ways of solving math
problems and that they may chose a method they most prefer to use in class. By
incorporating the flipped classroom videos into my curriculum, it will allow me
as the teacher to be flexible in class, differentiate and meet the needs of my
students. Students may access and view the videos at home, in class, and basically
anywhere as long as they have access to the Internet.

The best part is that they can view it as many times as needed in order to fully
comprehend the concept. Parents may also view the videos and help support their
child in their learning process. Most often I have parents who are not able to help
their child due to their own math deficit skills, but now parents can learn alongside
with their child and make it a great learning experience for both. I really love the
flipped classroom concept and will begin my very own flipped classroom
collection of videos soon.

Day 1: Students viewed Flipped Video Number 1: Adding Integers Using A
Number Line for homework from the previous day. They are asked to take notes
and come to class today to share what they learned and discovered in a
communication activity called Lines of Communication and engaging in a class
discussion. After the discussion, students will be able to practice and apply their
knowledge through collaborative group work in class on a variety of leveled
practice problems (Easy, Medium, Challenge practice problems).

Homework: Students are asked to watch Flipped Video Number 2: Adding
Integers with + & - Sign and take notes.

Day 2: Students will share out their ideas and notes on the second method in
how to add integers and share out which method they prefer the most and why.
Students will then practice and apply the new method learned through
collaborative group work in class on more practice problems.

Homework: Write a summary about the two methods learned and try to discover a
pattern with your results from the practice problems and be ready to share your
ideas in class.

Day 3: Students will engage in the lines of communication activity and share out
their conjectures on a general rule for adding integers. Students will then be
numbered (Numbered Heads) and break into in groups to collaborate and finalize
their conjectures to share out with the class.

Homework: Brainstorm ideas for your sticky note for the classroom Wall of
Knowledge through Padlet.

Day 4: As a conclusion, students will began searching online for additional
information (Picture, Video, Link to a Website) to add to their sticky note for the
classroom Wall of Knowledge through Padlet. Students will be able to explore and
discover other students thoughts through Padlet and expand on their knowledge
and application.

Conclusion: In math, there are multiple ways in solving a math problem. There
is no one-way and with todays technology and ample amount of resources, the
information is endless. This would be a great way to summarize the end of the
concept and have students apply what they learned and add something new and fun
to their learning process while incorporating the 21
st
century skills and tools.

*Teachers Role: The teacher will serve as a coach/facilitator to support and
guide students through the learning and practice of adding integers throughout each
day. If the teacher notices students having difficulty, she will work with those
particular students in a smaller group setting or in a one-on-one setting. The
Chromebooks will be available for students to access the flipped video if needed
more clarifications or direction in less.

*Lines of Communication Activity: Allows students to express and
communicate their ideas in a safe and comfortable environment. The activity
provides opportunities for students to share, collaborating and communicate with
one another (21
st
century skills). Students will also have their notes (from previous
nights homework assignment) to refer to if needed during the communication
activity.

*Description of Lines of Communication Activity: Students are
numbered off as 1 or two and line up in their perspective numbers, facing another
students as their partner. The students are asked to share their ideas and expand on
others shared ideas. As students finish sharing, one student from group 2 will walk
through the middle of the entire line and every student in group 2 will shift over
one place to their left. The students will then have a new partner and continue to
share and learn from one another.

After the lines of communication activity, students will them return back to their
groups and decide which method they would like to practice for the day and break
into groups of four. Students will be given a handout to meet the students. The
teacher will serve as a coach/facilitator to support and guide students through the
learning and practice of adding integers. If the teacher notices students having
difficulty, she will work with those particular students in a small group setting and
also chromebooks will be available for students to access the flipped video if
needed more clarifications or direction in less.

Adding Integer Practice Problems

*Students will be given a Number Line Placemat and Adding Integers Math
Problems in class to work on in class.

*Adding Integer Worksheets has a variety of different levels to help meet
students level and challenge others.

*Students may chose either method to work out the practice problems.

*Basic: Practice Problems

*Medium: Practice Problems

*Challenge: Teacher will provide students with Integers to enter in the pyramid. Students
may also challenge each other my creating their own pyramid and have another classmate to
complete it.
