English - Spelling Year 5 Term 1 2 3 4
EN3-4A draws on appropriate strategies to accurately spell familiar and unfamiliar words when composing texts
EN3-7C thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and ideas and identifies connections between texts when responding to and composing texts
EN3-8D identifies and considers how different viewpoints of their world, including aspects of culture, are represented in texts
EN3-9E recognises, reflects on and assesses their strengths as a learner
Teaching & Learning Activities for Spelling
Dot, Dash, Dive, Crash

Learning Intention
We Are Learning To identify each
separate sound in a word and know
what letters or letter combinations
make each sound.

Success Criteria
One letter makes one sound -
Dot
Two or more letters make one
sound - Dash
A vowel needs an e to make
long vowel sound - Dive
When two or three consonants
blend (pronounced
individually, but quickly) - Crash
Initial blends: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr,
gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp,
sq, st, str, sw, tr.
Final blends: ct, ft, lb, lt, mp, nd, ng,
nk, nt, pt, sk, sp, st

Students will use the Dot,
Dash, Dive, Crash symbols to
code the words in their
spelling list.
Students will practise
identifying separate sounds in
unfamiliar words using Elkonin
Boxes in attempts at spelling.

Spell-o-Basket

Learning Intention
We Are Learning To practise
writing our list words with accurate
spelling.

Success Criteria
Focus on the Spelling Choices

Students are divided into two
equal teams.
Each team has a white board,
marker and cloth (eraser).
One student from each team
will battle one another to
correctly spell a given word
from the list.
Each student receives 1 point if
it is spelt correctly. The student
who writes the word correctly
first gets an attempt to score a
goal in the basketball hoop.
1 step out from the hoop equals
1 point, 2 steps out from the
hoop equals 2 points and 3
steps out equals 3 points.
Super Sentences

We Are Learning To write use our
list words in a variety of interesting
sentences.

Use adjectives and adverbs
where appropriate.
Use a variety of sentence
beginnings (Use Sentence-A-
Day posters for ideas).
Re-read all sentences to check
that they make sense.

Students select a word from
their lists to use in a sentence.
Students will use Sentence-A-
Day posters to write their list
word into a variety of sentence
structures.

Dictionary Meanings

Learning Intention
We Are Learning To use a
dictionary to find the meanings of
unfamiliar words in our list

Success Criteria
Use our knowledge of
alphabetical order to find words
Copy the meaning accurately
into spelling book and check
that I understand what it
means.

Students highlight words in
their lists of which they are
unsure of their meaning.
Students use knowledge of
alphabetical order to locate the
word in the dictionary and copy
the meaning accurately into
their work books.
If a word has more than one
meaning, students are asked to
copy down two meanings.

Spelling Battleships

Learning Intention
We Are Learning To practise
writing our list words with accurate
spelling.

Success Criteria
Focus on the Spelling Choices
of the week
Use Spelling Choices desk
mat for reference.

Teacher reads out between 5
and 10 spelling words for
students to copy onto their

board. The class marks their
words together before the
game is played.
Students play in pairs. Player A
calls out a coordinate. If the
Player B has a letter in that
coordinate then they call out
