What is a pixel?

The world "pixel" means a picture element. Every photograph, in digital form, is made up of pixels.
They are the smallest unit of information that makes up a picture. Usually round or square, they are
typically arranged in a 2-dimension grid.

Creating a piece of work
To create a piece of work you must rst double click on the icon an open photoshop. Save an
image to your les then go back into Photoshop then click le open then nd and open your image,
you have now successfully opened and uploaded an image to photoshop.

What is a layer? And why is it used?
A layer is simply one image stacked on top of another. We use layers so that we can apply different
effects that don't necessarily apply to the whole photo.

1- Colour replacement tool

How to use the tool- with the colour replacement tool selected, your mouse cursor will change into
a circle with a small target in the middle. You can adjust the size of the circle using your keyboard
using the bracket keys. To make it larger use the right bracket key to make it smaller use the left
bracket key. To change the foreground colour, simply click directly on the colour swatch, then
chose a new colour.




Paint bucket tool- This tool allows you to ll in whole images on a selected area with a solid colour.
Towards the middle if the toolbox you will nd the paint bucket tool. When you move your cursor to
the image you will notice it changes to a paint bucket left click and it will allow you to change the
colour.

Blur tool- this tool allows you to make certain areas of an image as if the image was lmed with
am out of focus camera. To use this tool right click the little blue rain drop near the bottom of your
tool box when you have done this left click "blur tool". This tool helps you change the depth of the
eld. To use this tool left click an area and hold down the left mouse button and drag over the
selected area.

Smudge tool- The smudge tool is like painting a picture using one brush and pointing over it with
another using a different colour. To nd this tool right click the little blue raindrop image at the
bottom of the toolbox and left click smudge. To use this just drag the cursor and draw the line
where you want this smudge.

Sharpen tool- this tool is used to sharpen and strengthen your shapes and indirect make it thicker
and generally darker. You should only use this tool on small images or areas of an image. To nd
this tool right click the little blue raindrop image and left click on the "sharpen tool". To use this tool
drag you cursor on the area of the image you want to sharpen.
