FCS 4131
Instructional Design Project
Leesville Road High School is one of 28 public High Schools in the Wake
County Public School system. Located in the northern Raleigh district of North
Carolina, Leesville is a high performing high school with nationally recognized
academics and follows the two-semester block schedule.
LRHS has an average of 2,275 students in grades 9-12, and claims to be a safe,
supportive, engaging environment conducive to student learning. Seventy percent of
the students go to a four-year college after high school. The school mission statement
is, to inspire students love for learning and ensure that they have the necessary
skills to be self-reliant citizens who can think critically and solve future challenges.
LRHS teachers are held to a standard requiring more than just facilitating, but
to sparking each students interest to achieve academic success and pursue learning
beyond the classroom. The teachers at LRHS are not only challenged but also
supported by the community and leaders of the school. The teachers are even
supported through having their own webpages on the school website, where they
have the freedom to tell students and parents about their self and their courses.
Parents are encouraged to be an active role in the students lives. Parents are
valued and respected by the school, and community involvement is vital to the
schools success. Parent involvement includes: Booster Clubs in Band, Dance,
Performing Arts, Pride Athletics, and Pride Productions Drama. Parents can also be
involved in the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association at Leesville.
The departments at LRHS include: CTE, English, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Media
Center, Physical Ed, Science, Social Studies, Student Services, and World Languages.

1. Using a housing floor plan, discuss which rooms are shared and which rooms
are personal. Highlight the rooms in different colors and then explain to the
class your reasoning.
2. Working in groups, looks through magazines and identify different rooms and
their traffic patterns. Does the furniture seem to allow comfortable traffic
movement? What might you do differently?

1. Draw a one-story floor plan for a young family of three. Label the distinctive
living spaces by coloring shared vs. personal spaces in different colored
pencils.
2. Draw the correct symbols for windows, closets, doors, walls, etc. on your floor
plan. After you have properly labeled everything, display your floor plan on
the bulletin board.

1. You need to fill your 16x20 sq. ft. bonus room with furniture. A few items you
may think to include are: couch, chairs, coffee table, end tables, bookshelf,
entertainment center, etc. Your room is 16x20, find at least 5 furniture pieces
that will fit in your room by researching furniture online and fitting it to scale.
2. Find three different ways of rearranging your chosen furniture in your bonus
room, being mindful of traffic patterns.

Switch with another student and check to see if you both agree.
