Reading: We will be learning about and reading lyric poetry and haiku. Text features of lyric poetry are
that it expresses the thought and feeling of the poet and it has end rhymes. The text features of a
haiku are 3 short lines that describe a scene or a moment. The first and last line have five syllables and
the second line has seven. We will use learning how to find the point of view of a poem and about meter
and rhyme, similes and metaphors. (meter is the arrangement of accented and unaccented syllable s in a
line of poetry. Rhyme is when the endings of lines sound the same. Similes is a comparison of two unlike
things using the word like or as. Metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things without the use of like
or as. We will learn how the suffixes and how they affect a words meaning and about contractions.
Your child needs to practice vocabulary words, as they will be tested over them as well. Vocab words
are: creative, brittle, descriptive, outstretched, metaphor, simile, rhyme, meter
Math: We will be starting unit 5, Multiplying by 1 digit numbers. We will be multiplying by 10 and 100,
using mental math to multiply, using rounding to estimate, and using an expanded algorithm.
Indiana History: We will be learning all about the early plants and animals of Indiana. We will learn how
the people used the natural features and resources of Indiana to survive. We will begin to explore the
Native American tribes.
Science: Students received a study guide about matter yesterday. They will be tested
over the information on Tuesday. Please make sure your child studies the study guide.

shapeless, ageless, illness, goodness, spotless, painless, weakness, darkest, clearest, thoughtful

Language: We will be learning to combine sentences using subject nouns and predicate nouns. We will
also learn about appositives (nouns that describe the noun that comes before it and is separated from
the rest of the sentences with commas) and interjections (expressions that show emotion).
