Artifact Description: The following artifact is my Classroom Behavior Management Plan. I created the management plan for my Guidance, Assessment, and Classroom Management class in the spring semester of 2014. During that time I was also involved in my pre- student teaching in a fourth grade classroom, therefore, my plan is designed for this age level. Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: This artifact best aligns with Standard 5: Learning Environment The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation. This experience aligns with Standard 5 because it shows that I understand the principles of effective classroom management and can use a range of strategies to promote positive relationships, cooperation, and purposeful learning in the classroom. When students have a clear understanding of procedures, rules, and expectations, more time can be devoted to meaningful learning with less time being wasted on non-learning activities. In order for students to acquire this knowledge they must have a teacher that understands the principles of effective classroom management and can use a range of strategies to promote positive relationships, cooperation, and purposeful learning in the classroom. The teacher must then relay this information in an effective manner to students. I feel the strategies I incorporated into my plan will allow for this to happen. I am more competent now in this standard because while developing my management plan, I took into account behaviors I have witnessed during my pre- student teaching. I then was able to assess these behaviors, whether they be positive or negative, and observe how my coordinating teacher reacted. What I realized is that the teacher is responsible for establishing a positive climate in the classroom and also contributes to maintaining a positive environment in the school as a whole. Therefore, a classroom management plan should be reflective of that, which I believe mine is. UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment: This experience best aligns with KSD2.b: Establishing a Culture for Learning - The candidate values and has the ability to manage self-motivated students and instructional groups who are productively and independently working at all times with classroom transitions and routines occurring smoothly. The teacher, volunteers, paraprofessionals and students share the responsibility for the classroom environment.
This experience from my pre-student teaching best aligns with this KSD because in my classroom management plan, I have clear procedures and rules already in place for my future classroom. I have developed my management plan to allow for smooth transitions, student productivity, and promotes positive peer relationships in establishing a climate of learning.
I am more competent after this experience because I have carefully considered not only the rules and procedures my students will be expected to follow on a daily basis, but also the expectations I will set for set for students and how I will use positive reinforcement to achieve desired behaviors from students.
Secondary KSDs:
KSD2.a: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport KSD2.c: Managing Classroom Procedures KSD2.d: Managing Student Behavior Personal Reflection: What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: From this experience of developing a classroom management plan, along with my observations in my pre-student teaching placement, I have realized the importance of having and implementing an effective behavior plan. When a classroom management plan has been well thought out and implemented, the classroom can run smoothly and be a haven for students to learn and grow. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience: As a result of this experience, I learned how important it is to be proactive in setting clear expectations and procedures within the classroom. In order to do this it requires time and planning before the school year begins to establish the rules and procedures that will ultimately decided the learning environment of your classroom. As an educator, it is important to evaluate and consider every aspect of daily classroom life and make decisions on how you will respond to different situations. These decisions will affect how your classroom runs and the learning environment you create.
