MATERIALS:

You will be given a copy of The Giver to borrow for this unit. You may
not write in these copies of the book. If students have their own
copies of the book that they would like to bring in an annotate/write
in, they are welcome to do so.

READING SCHEDULE:
It is crucial that you stay on schedule with the reading so that you can
participate in class activities and classroom discussions.

If you have already read The Giver, you are still required to read the
required chapters for each class. You will not do well on
comprehension quizzes if you do not re-read the novel on pace with
the rest of the class.

If you are struggling to keep up with the reading pace, you may want
to consider listening to an audiobook as you read along with the text.
There are audiobooks available on YouTube and iTunes. HOWEVER,
THE MOVIE IS NOT A SUBSITUTE FOR THIS NOVEL.

Here is the reading schedule:

The
Giver
ELA 7
Whether youve read the
book, seen the movie, or
know nothing about The
Giver, this wonderful
classic by Lois Lowry will
make you see the world
around you in a different
light. Get ready to read
deeply, write critically,
and explore new ideas!
This worksheet will give
you an idea of what to
expect in this unit.
COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS:
For each set of chapters you read, you will be required to complete
some comprehension questions. You will respond to these questions
on a Google Document in your English 7 folder. You will title this
folder The Giver Notes. These will help you prepare for the
comprehension quizzes and the daily class discussions! At the end of
the unit, you will turn in all of your completed questions for a grade.

COMPREHENSION QUIZZES:
Every class, you will take a comprehension quiz that will go into the
Practice section of your gradebook (10%). You will be given a quote
from the chapters you had to read, and you will have to explain what
the quote is talking about. These will be very easy if you read the
assigned chapters. They will be difficult if you simply read summaries
of the chapters (SparkNotes, for example, is not a substitute for
reading a chapter of a novel).

If you do not score well on your comprehension quiz, you will be
required to e-mail your parents, miss out on that days activity to re-
read the chapter and write a 10 sentence summary of the chapter on
your own. You will then come in for lunch to re-take the
comprehension quiz.

VOCABULARY QUIZZES/tests:
Every class, you will learn 5-9 new vocabulary words from the
chapters of The Giver that we read. You will have 3 quizzes on these
vocabulary words. See the schedule for these vocabulary quizzes
below:

Chapters 1-6: 11/3 & 11/4

Chapters 7-13: 11/11 & 11/12

Chapters 1-23: 12/3 & 12/4
