AE 302 Aerodynamics II Fall 2012

Homework 5 (due 10/11/12 in class)

1.(a) A flat plate is placed in a supersonic stream, aligned with the flow direction. Weak
waves caused by roughness on the plate are observed. Determine the Mach number of the
supersonic stream when the waves are at the following angles to the flow direction:
(i) 70

(ii) 35

(iii) 17.5

(b). Problem 9.5 in the text. In addition, compute the stagnation pressure in front of the
shock and the stagnation pressure behind the shock.
(c) Problem 9.7 in the text.

2. Problem 9.8 in Anderson except change the Mach number to 5.0.

3. (a) Problem 9.9 in Anderson except change the Mach number to 3.5. Use the
conditions give in part (a) (Problem 9.9 in Anderson with M
1
= 3.5). If the deflection
angle is changed, determine at what value of you would first see a Mach reflection
from the upper wall. Is this value of greater than or less than the value in part (a)?
(Iterations might be needed; you could write-up a Matlab code for this)
(b) Use the conditions give in part (a) (Problem 9.9 in Anderson with M
1
= 3.5). If the
deflection angle is changed, determine at what value of you would first see a Mach
reflection from the upper wall. Is this value of greater than or less than the value in part
(a)?

4. If the Mach number and pressure ahead of the oblique shock wave system shown
below are 3 and 50 KPa respectively, find the pressure in the region 4 downstream of the
wave intersection. (Iterations might be needed)
