Directions: Practice close reading skills while reading the following text,
Mending Wall by Robert Frost. While reading the poem, break when
signaled by the stop signs embedded throughout the text, and answer the
questions that correspond to that particular section of the reading.
Important Vocabulary:
1. Abreast: (adverb, adjective) side by side; beside each other in a line
2. Yelping: (verb) to give a quick, sharp, shrill cry
3. Gap: (noun) a break or opening, as in a fence, wall, or military line;
breach
4. Mend: (verb) to make whole, sounds, or usable by repairing

Mending Wall

Something there is that doesnt love a wall,


That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

I have come after them and made repair


Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,

But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.

Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
