ACTIVITY TOPIC: Serve as Co-Advisor of Student Club
PARTICIPANTS NAME: Dana L. Sawyer 1. What were the significant learning points for you in this activity? I served as the Co-Leader of Terry's Paralegal Association in the 2013/2014 school year. The other Co-Chair was a new faculty member in the program so it was a learning experience for both of us. The Club started out small, but active. The Constitution and By-Laws were re-vamped during the year, activities planned and held and elections for the following year completed. The Club had only female students, but they actively recruited other students throughout the year and the Club did double in size by the end of the year. I was impressed with the caliber of the students, their enthuasiam and their organizational skills. They enjoyed interacting with the Chairs, took advice well and were fairly independent in their actions.
2. Which leadership characteristic(s) was/were enhanced and/or learned through this
activity? Explain. It was a great experience co-leading this group of students. They were very dedicated to their studies and profession, and took on responsibility readily. The Club did need guidance, but the Chairs did more modeling of behavior rather than teaching. We offered suggestions, chimed in when needed and made sure that all policies were being followed. Leadership can take many forms - informal, formal, coaching and mentoring, depending on your audience. Communication is key to any leadership role. We worked with the students on how to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, as many struggled with that concept. We helped them develop written guidelines and promotional materials and coached them on how to be sound presenters to get their ideas and needs across. All in all, it was a fun and fulfilling time.
