Currahee Commentary

And a new season begins.Well the last game didnt turn out how we would
have liked, but none the less our Hallsville Indians finished the regular season
7-2, only the best record yet for a Hallsville football team!!! Not too bad if I say so
myself!!

As most of you are probably not aware the Hallsville Indians have been placed
on what has turned out to be the toughest district in class two in my opinion.
Three teams are undefeated, two only have one loss and lucky for us due to the
strength of our schedule we were seeded fourth with two losses ahead of both
the one-loss teams. These district matchups are far from predictable and
anything can happen the next three weeks as these teams battle it out for a
chance to play for a district championship on Friday Nov 7
th
.

Hallsville has drawn Father Tolton in the first round, a team we scrimmaged
against at the pre-season Jamboree. This is a team that matches up with
Hallsville well and has a few skill players that are very talented.

Our Hallsville Indians need their fans now more than ever as they look to make a
push into the playoffs. We have a very talented team and when firing on all
cylinders can be a very dangerous team now that we are playing opponents our
own size. You must remember our conference is loaded with Class 3 schools,
which is great when preparing for a playoff run, especially when you competed
well and now we get to show Hallsville and the rest of the state what that good
competition does for you come week 10!!!!

We have your back Indians and I will join the rest of the Hallsville Community at
the football stadium this Friday night as the Indians look to make History and put
themselves in a position to play football week 11, the second round of District
Playoffs!!!!

Answer the Bell Answer the Bell Answer the Bell Answer the Bell
It was always going to be a difficult night for our hometown Indians. They were
facing a much larger class 3 school. A storied program that had suffered two consecutive
upsets by upstart Hallsville teams. A team who lost their homecoming game last year, in
double overtime no less, to some renegade Indians from the north.
And most importantly, our Indians were facing a team with a head coach who was
new to Osage players, but had been our Indians leader for most of their varsity careers.
Talk about a quality scouting report.
Nevertheless, our Indians started the contest against the Osage Indians well enough.
Taking the opening kickoff, Hallsville was able to move the ball very effectively on the
ground, driving well into Osage territory before a fumble halted their progress.
The Hallsville defense started out hot as well. Despite giving up first down on a long
pass, they forced an Osage punt from deep in their own territory after a tackle for a loss
and a big sack. But when the hometown Indian offense sputtered with a three and out, the
Osage squad would take advantage. A forty two yard pass would set up a short run, and
Osage took an early 7-0 lead.
The Indian offense shook off the punch, delivering a blow of their own. Wideout Kyle
Borland would catch a 66 yard TD pass on the first play of the ensuing drive, leveling the
score. And the defense would provide a body blow as well, with zero yards allowed on
the next drive.
But the offense failed to take advantage, with the next drive fizzling near midfield.
With Osage having very little success running the football, they decided to take to the
air. Four big pass plays, including one on a critical 4
th
down, set up a reverse play in the
red zone that scored the second Osage TD of the night.
Hallsville would answer again. Wideout Alex Peterson would catch a 48 yard pass,
taking it down to the Osage 1. And RB Skyler Creed would punch it in on the next play,
evening the game. And when the Hallsville defense provided a big interception with less
than 2 minutes left in the half, they had all the momentum.
Two plays later, after a 51 yard interception return for a touchdown, the momentum
was gone. And when the ensuing drive ended in the Osage red zone without points,
Hallsville went into the locker room down 21-14.
Osage took that momentum into the second half, and poured it on with a flurry of
punches. After some ineffective play by the Hallsville offense, including two more
critical turnovers, the visiting Indians led 38-14, with only a bit of time left on the clock.
Thats when it happened. The lesson I hope our Indians will learn from last Friday
night was driven home by a sophmore on the very last play of the game. Catching a pass
in the flat, the undersized tight end would be hit by not one, not two, but by three Osage
defenders at the 5 yard line. He absorbed the blows, and instead of falling to the ground,
he kept his legs driving. And he drove that pile of defenders all the way to, and past, the
goal line, for what most people would consider a meaningless score.

Answer the Bell Answer the Bell Answer the Bell Answer the Bell (cont) (cont) (cont) (cont)
It wasnt meaningless to Hunter Tessman. Because hes learned the lesson that I hope
the rest of our Indians will take to heart as they enter district playoffs. A district playoff
that will include 6 teams with records of 7-2 or better. Hes learned that sometimes, you
are going to get hit. Sometimes you are even going to get knocked to the ground. But no
matter what happens, no matter how tough things might be, when the bell rings... there is
only one thing a fighter can do.
Time to answer the bell, Indians.

JV UPDATE JV UPDATE JV UPDATE JV UPDATE
My own anxiety began when I arrived. The Eldon Mustangs were warming up.... Our
Indians were in the locker room and without the ability to compare side to side..... The
Mustangs looked big and the adversity angels were swarming around my head. Oh well,
at least the weather was nice.
When our 17 Indians emerged from the locker room, the another angel started poking
me in the ribs.
As usual, our defense was dominant in the first quarter and really controlled the
action. The first quarter ended 0 - 0. During the second quarter our offense started
controlling the line, and we scored at TD + 2 ! At half the score was 8-0.
Truthfully, I was nervous. We'd seen the games get away before, but the boys
dominated the second half by scoring 22 points and controlling everything about the
game.
Hallsville wins 30-0!

I look forward to next season. See you on Friday at Districts vs Tolton.
Sincerely,
Proud Father, Proud Friend

MIDDLE SCHOOL
The MS football season ended with 2 great games: the 7
th
grade made a come back
and won 26-18, and the 8
th
grade won 26-6.
The 7
th
Grade battled back and forth with the Mustangs and even though the score
seems close, I believe that we dominated the game. Without the two interceptions
returned for touchdowns, the Mustangs really did not move the ball on our defense. On
the offensive side of the ball, other than the two turnovers, we moved the ball very well.
Mason Huskey scored on the opening kick off for the second game in a row. Jake
Ashburn ran for a touchdown and also threw a touchdown to Clayton Cook. Cooper
Crane scored on a running touchdown to give us the lead. Eric Reed ran in a 2 point
conversion. Making the final score 26-18.
Final HALLSVILLE 26 Eldon 18

The 8
th
grade took the field for their final MS game. We dominated this game on both
sides of the ball. We scored on the first play from scrimmage when Jarrett Ballard (JB)
ran around the right end for about a 70 yard run. Eldon did tie up the game, but then it
was all HALLSVILLE. We scored on our next position on a long pass from Zane Parnell
to BJ Fisher. JB added two more runs, and we had a 2 point conversion on a pass from
Parnell to Colton Graybill. Making the final 26-6.
Final HALLSVILLE 26 Eldon 6.

It was a great season for both teams, and speaking for all the coaches, we are very
proud of them. As for myself, the 7
th
grade has set a tone for what I expect to continue for
the next 6 years.
As for the 8
th
grade, I myself could not be more proud of this team. After going 0-6
last year, they could have just came out and went through the motions, but they did not.
They worked hard and pulled together as a TEAM. This was something I believed was in
them all along, and it finally came and gave them a great season of 5-1.
This group (7
th
and 8
th
) of young men was probably my most challenging group
combined that I have coached, but in the end on they are also the group that I am most
PROUD of. Not because of the wins/losses, but because they figured it out that it takes a
TEAM to play this game. For that I want to say THANK YOU to all of the players.
I want to also thank Anna Ashburn, Shannon Ballard, Wendy Durk, Sara Crane and
whoever else I might have forgotten for our pre-game meals. I want to thank the Blivens
for the tailgate meals for the Friday Night Varsity home games, which is a tradition that I
would like to keep going. I would like to thank the QuarterBackers for all they do to
support the football programs, most importantly Sandy Drummond for putting up with
my recaps that she has to proof read.
For those of you that made it to the games to support both of these teams, THANK
YOU. You all help these boys get to games, practices, but mostly you are there to
support them and that is great.
Thanks
Coach Forge

Grade Grade Grade Grade
The 3rd Grade Hallsville Indian Football Team ended their season on Saturday with a
hard fought 7-0 loss to the Southern Boone Eagles. While the final score wasn't what the
Indians hoped for, the way they played the game was consistent with the last couple of
weeks - they played with great heart and enthusiasm. Again playing without their
starting Quarterback, the Indians faced an Eagles Team who had been mopping up their
opponents throughout the league. Even though short-handed, the boys stepped up and
proved to everyone that they were a force to be reckoned with. Graham Bartlett and
Owen Perez shared the QB duties and both managed the game effectively. The offense
moved the ball all day, but just couldn't quite hit paydirt against a tough Southern Boone
Defense. Lathan Sanchez, Bryson Shurbier, and Brodie Atkins all played well on the
offensive line, and a late surge by the Indians almost pulled them even.
As the final seconds of the season ticked away, Owen Perez took a zone read play,
found a seam, and kept it for a 50 yard gain. If it weren't for a shoe string tackle by a
determined Eagle, the Indians would have been in business. The Indian Defense was the
reason they were still in the game though. They kept a high powered Eagle offense at
bay most of the day, and kept them to over 20 points below their season scoring average.
Adam Jenkins, Devin Belcher, and Nathan Herbold played their best defensive game of
the year, and their improvement helped the Hallsville D raise their collective bar and play
their best game of the year.
Overall, the year proved to be a great experience for all of us. The boys and the
coaches learned a lot from one another over the course of the season, and had a lot of fun
along the way. These Indians are the future of Hallsville Football. They will one day be
Friday Night Heros. Based upon the quality of young men that I had the honor to coach
this year, I would say our future Friday nights look to be filled with BRIGHT LIGHTS.

OK We finally made it to the end of the year. The 3/4 grade finished the season 2-3-1.
I consider the 0-0 tie with Moberly a win. The boys came along way this year in what
seems like a short time. We beat Southern Boone 13-0 in the last game of the year, and
it's awesome to end the season on a positive note. Thanks to all of the parents for their
contributions and positive attitude. A BIG thank you to all of the assistant coaches for
their help this year--couldn't have done it without you. I'm already looking forward to
next year..... GO VARSITY against Father Tolton.

The 5/6th Grade Hallsville Football Team took on Ashland, Saturday for their last
game of the season. After Ashland got the opening kickoff, our defense held them on 4
straight plays to get the ball back on the 40 yard line. First play out, Colton Hobbs hits
Jalen George out in the flat with a short pass as Chase Morris ran around the outside for
the handoff sprinting for about 30 yards. Two plays later Trent Hobbs scores from 2
yards out to put us on the board 6-0. Hayden Orscheln added 2 more points with the
successful PAT.
Our defense played outstanding, bending at times but never breaking. We had
monster hits from the Hobbs Boys, Landon Heibal, Jack March & Andrew Kabrick, just
to say a few. Our offense got the ball back and Colton Hobbs got loose on a QB Sweep
to change our lead to 14-0, and then again Orscheln put his foot in it to bring us to 16-0 at
the half.
The 3rd quarter was scoreless, however Colton Hobbs got loose again in the 4th
quarter to put the final score at 22-0.
This 5/6th Grade Hallsville Football Team ended the season 5-1 with our offense
putting up 154 points and our defense only allowing 54 points. Orscheln finished the
season 14-21 on PAT's. I'm so proud of all the boys and all the work they put in to be so
successful.
Thanks for a great season. ~Zane Cobb~
