MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB)

PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of
vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days,
then the water will flow into the egg

THEORY:

PROCEDURE:
1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm.
2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar.
3. Record observations.
4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations.

DATA/OBSERVATIONS:

DAYS CIRCUMFERENCE
(cm)
LIQUID LEVEL
(ml)
OBSERVATIONS
1 15cm 250mL Oxygen getting
released through egg
shell and starting to
get rounded and float.
2 15.4cm 225mL Its dissolving and getting
smaller
3 16.5 200mL Completely dissolved

TOTAL EXPANSION GROUP # = 1.5cm
AVERAGE EXPANSION CLASS = 2.3cm
AVERAGE EXPANSION (7

GRADE)= 2.6cm

EXPANSSION COMPARISSONS
CONCLUSION:
In this lab we tested how would an egg react if we put it inside
vinegar. My hypothesis was that the water from the vinegar was going
to collide with the egg causing the water molecules to go through the
selectively permeable membrane, because the vinegar was high
concentrated the water molecules went to were the low concentration
was, which in this case was the egg. This process is called osmosis
when water molecules go from high to low concentration. Our groups
egg expanded a total of 1.5 cm, which is 0.8 cm lower than the class
average and 1.1 cm less than the whole seventh grade. In conclusion
my hypothesis was correct because 31 out of 31 eggs expanded.

ANALYSIS:

1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? Osmosis

2. Compare data sets for all classes.

3. This lab models Osmosis. Why do cells need water? Because
every chemical reaction needs water to happen
