The following is a sample of the Lesson Plan format used by the University.

Students will learn about the different ways the Aboriginal people were affected when Australia was
colonised
Assessment:
Students will write a plan for a diary styled fiction piece from the perspective of an Aboriginal person
during the colonisation of Australia.

Teaching focus:
A. Teacher will focus on behaviour management, making sure that the students are working in
a low noise level environment




Background to the learning:
A. Teacher has researched though a few non-fiction books on aboriginal history and

Lesson content:
A. Introduction 5 mins

Show the students the video of Waruwi

B. Development __15__ mins
1. Have a discussion with the students about the differences between the aboriginal people and
the British
Can you tell me what happened when Waruwi saw the cow?
2. Identify the lifestyle of the aboriginal people
What did they use to build their shelter?
What kind of clothing did they have?
3. Guide students to infer from video
Where do you think the men were?
4. Discuss the story in Waruwis perspective
How do you think she felt throughout the discovery?
5. Get the students to discuss aboriginal lifestyle before the colonisation and how it might have
affected them after the colonisation
On a day to day basis, before seeing the British, how do you think Waruwi lived?
How do you think that changed after the British began colonising Australia and taking their
land?
6. Instruct students on their task
They must make a plan to create a diary styled fiction piece of an aboriginal person living
through the colonisation of Australia
When they finish their diary entry plan, they can begin planning what they would like to draw
on their representation of their diary entry.
Will it be in first/second/third person?


C. Consolidation, practice, extension __60_ mins
1. They must make a plan to create a diary entry of an aboriginal person, it can be made up and
must be an entry during the colonisation of Australia
2. In the plan, they must choose an appropriate date, research what was happening during the
colonisation during that time, explain their how they live/felt, describe how the colonisation
affected them (disease, addictions, killings, stolen children), if they lived/died/had children,
etc.
3. Students are to use laptops/computers to research and so that the diary entries are realistic
as possible.
4. Students who are finished can begin planning for their drawing/painting.



D. Closure __10_ mins
- A few students can share their plans where the teacher can suggest improvements or praise
them for creativity
