Week 1 DQ3

What energy systems are responsible for living organisms to acquire energy and transform
energy into other forms?
We generally group organisms on the basis of shared evolutionary histories, creating taxa such as
vertebrate animals, insects, coniferous trees, and orchids !o"ever, "e can also classify
organisms by ho" they obtain energy##that is, by their trophic $feeding% biology &rganisms that
use inorganic sources of both carbon and energy are called autotroph's $(self#feeders(% and are of
t"o types, photosynthetic and chemosynthetic )hotosynthetic autotroph's use carbon dioxide
$)*&+% as a source of carbon and light as a source of energy ,his group includes the plants,
photosynthetic protists, and photosynthetic bacteria
Whether on coral reef, rain forest, or abandoned urban lot, organisms engage in an active search
for energy and nutrients -or must organisms, life boils do"n to converting energy and nutrients
into descendants ,he energy used by different organisms comes in the form of light, organic
molecules, or inorganic molecules .utrients are the ra" materials an organism must acquire
from the environment to live /ecause organisms acquire energy and nutrients in diverse "ays,
"e need to organi0e our discussion under the umbrella of ma1or concepts
