COVER LETTER
Should show enthusiasm (without brown-nosing)
This is the appropriate place for demonstrating that
you know the particular school
Do your research
The schools website will have most of what you need
The Annual Implementation Plan and School Strategic
Plan are worth reading
And show that your skill set matches the
vision/needs/ethos of the school
RESUME
Do include:
Name, address, phone numbers, email, current school
& position, qualifications, VIT number, teaching areas,
roles outside of the classroom,
certificates/accreditations, recent professional learning,
interests & three referees.
Do not include:
Age, religion, marital status.
Long list of professional learning done over many years.
Too detailed list of teaching areas.
Should be easy to read. Not cluttered


REFEREES
Include the Principal of your current school they
will be contacted anyway.
Choose the other 2 based on who will say the most
complimentary things about you.
Its a good idea if they are senior and dont hold
similar roles to each other.
Tell/ask them to be referees and give them a copy
of your application
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA (KSC)
5 or so statements that describe the requirements
of the position.
Often similar for all jobs of the same classification.
Each statement requires a response of a page or
more.

learning including the Standards, the Principles of
Learning & Teaching P 12 and Assessment &
Reporting Advice and the ability to design
curriculum programs consistent with their intent.
Capacity to monitor and assess student learning
data and to use this data to inform teaching for
improved student learning.

Demonstrate an understanding of how students
learn and effective classroom teaching strategies
and the capacity to work with colleagues to
continually improve teaching and learning.
Demonstrated high level written & verbal
communication skills, & high level interpersonal
skills including a capacity to develop constructive
relationships with students, parents & other staff.

Demonstrated commitment and capacity to actively
contribute to a broad range of school activities and
a capacity to reflect on, evaluate and improve
professional knowledge and practice.

WRITING YOUR RESPONSE TO THE KSC
For each Criterion:
Work out what exactly it means.
Put this information into dot points
Now, begin to structure your response
For each dot point/criterion, list your relevant skills and
experience
Work out which points you use where its best not to
repeat the same examples
Make sure that you find somewhere to include all the
good things that you do
WRITING YOUR RESPONSE TO THE KSC
Finally, write your response!
Begin your response to each criterion with a summary
of how you will answer and what the criterion means to
you
Turn your dot points into paragraphs
For every point you make, back it up with a detailed
example
It should read well proof read thoroughly
Make it as short as possible

Personalise the end of each response for each
application you submit
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
DO A PRACTICE INTERVIEW
Read through the criteria again and make sure you
have responses to each
Write down the points about yourself that you want
to make
Write down the questions that you want to ask. Its
best if they are specific to the school.
Think about how you will physically present
Outfit?
When to arrive?
What will you carry?
Posture?
INTERVIEW
Will always consist of a panel of three. Both
genders
You will be given about 5 questions and 10 minutes
to think of your answers.
How do you engage learners in your subject area?
Your approach to classroom management?
How do you use assessment for learning?
How well do you work in teams?
An example of a unit youve taught
Dealing with conflict with staff?
Write your answers to these
DURING THE INTERVIEW
Answer the questions as if you do not know anyone
on the panel.
Check that you have covered what was asked
before you move onto the next question.
More talk is better than less
Answer questions YOUR way.
Provide evidence of the claims that you are making.
Anecdotes.
Sum up at the end of the interview indicating why
you should be appointed to the role.
