Rationale for Planning, Preparation, Instruction, and Assessment of Learners The artifact I selected to demonstrate the rationale of planning, preparation, instruction, and assessment of learners is a copy of an exit ticket I administered at the end of introducing the lesson plan of Adding Mentally. At the end of the lesson I gave which student an exit ticket with the question, What questions do you still have about adding mentally? Their instructions were to fill out the ticket on their way out for lunch. If the students didnt have a question I instructed the students to explain what they had learned. This one particular student answered my exit ticket as, Is this how its always going to be, because I dont like it? The strategy of using an exit ticket has a very important concept. Ive used exit tickets in many different ways. Most of the time my exit tickets includes just a question or two for the students to answer quickly at the end of class. I usually collect them as the students leave and its a good way to dismiss you students individually be intentional with saying goodbye to each one of them. Its also great way to incorporate the closure in your lesson. The exit tickets I choose to use is a deliberate way to establish an expectation that they need to be focused and driven during the lesson so that they can complete the exit ticket. In addition that exit tickets is a great way to assess what students learned, but they are also a good tool for teachers to plan and prepare instruction and assessment of learners. Exit tickets help me see if I taught the material well and if students understand what was being taught. In this particular case, it was apparent that this particular student didnt understand the main points of the lesson. It was very insightful on the different ways that students can learn. An exit ticket gives me the opportunity to re-evaluate my lesson plans so that I can develop a plan to RATIONALE/ REFLECTION COMPETENCY B ARTIFACT 1 3
teach in a different way or more successful and productive way so that all students are learning and growing. During the course of examining the exit tickets for this particular lesson I learned that half of the class understood the strategy of adding mentally and it helped them with addition however, the other half of the class did not understand the strategy of adding mentally and did not enjoy it. It was a very enlightening experience. It made me realize that I needed to re- evaluate my plans for the following days to reach all of my different learners. The following day I taught the U.S Algorithm strategy for addition and the students that did understand or enjoyed the adding mentally strategy were able to use and succeed with this strategy. Reflection for Planning, Preparation, Instruction, and Assessment of Learners I selected this artifact because it mirrors my teaching philosophy that all students deserve the opportunity to learn. The use of exit tickets teaches myself as an educator in many different ways and allows me to reach all of my students. Its very quick and easy and does not take much time. It allows me address questions or misunderstandings and, it also allows me to differentiate my instruction for particular students. I can only hope by using exit tickets in the classroom that my students will learn to develop mastery goals rather than performance goals. I hope that my students will reflect to gain knowledge and skills. In addition, I hope that students will learn to use their exit tickets as a way to improve their work ethic, and better understand, apply, and use the knowledge that they have obtained.
