Lesson Plan Year 5/6Q Mathematics

Date: 8/05/14

Year Level:
5/6Q

Topic: Multiplication Algorithms

Aim: Students to be able to successfully complete algorithms using multiple digits.

Outcome: For students to gain an understanding of algorithmic equations using multiple digits, regrouping,
carrying and working with zeroes.

Learning Intention: Success Criteria:
To multiply algorithmic equations using different
techniques.
Look at the right hand column and answer
that equation vertically first.
If the answer to the right hand column is 10
or greater, the ten carries to the next column
on the left.
Once the next column is multiplied, the
carryover ten from the previous equation is
ADDED onto that answer below the line.
Students to use equal group technique to
assist with equations.
Focus Vocabulary:
Multiplication, algorithms, carry over, carrying, adding, grouping.

Warm up
5 Mins

Students to undertake Mastermind activity.
Teacher thinks of a 4 digit number and keep it to
themselves.
Students need to guess what the number is by
writing on the board.
If they guess a number that is in the answer but
not in the right spot, a circle is placed on top.
If the number guessed is not in the equation, an
x is placed on top.
If the number guessed is in the correct place, a
tick will be placed on top.
This activity will be run multiple times depending
on time.

Introduction
10 Mins

Students to be given introduction of what will
take place in the lesson, multiplying with
algorithms.
Teacher will model on the board how to carry
and add.
Teacher will also model grouping to assist
students with their multiplication.

Activity
30 Mins

All students will be given a worksheet with
approximately 10 equations.
High: Students who complete the worksheet
with ease, will move to the back of the room and
be given word problems to complete. They will
also utilise the whiteboard and create their own
equations for their peers to complete.
Medium: Students who still have not grasped the
equations will be given another sheet to
complete which grow in difficulty. At the
completion of the sheet students who are
confident can move into the higher group, if not
they will complete the multiplication racers
sheet, competing with peers.
Low: Students who are not entirely sure or are
struggling with the task will work on the floor
with the teacher, breaking every equation down
and practicing more simple algorithms.
Students can move up or down from the group
they are allocated if they feel they need to.

Focus Group

Provide counters,
paddle pop sticks
and a mini white
board for each
student.
Reflection
5 Mins

Class discussion.
Students to reflect on what they found difficult,
different strategies they utilised to improve
themselves and areas of feedback.
