Notre Dame Cathedral is located in Paris and is
really famous. It stands on the island Ile de la
Cite, which is near the Seine River in the centre
of Paris. The cathedral is dedicated to Notre
Dame which in French means Our Lady, The
Virgin Mary. This cathedral is one of the finest
example of Gothic architecture.

Notre dame cathedral was built between 1163
and 1250. But during the French revolution most
of the cathedral was destroyed which occurred
in the late 1700s, because they hated monarchy
of the church. Then in 1845 the French architect
Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc that ordered
and planned to the extensive restoration of the
Notre Dame Cathedral. He was the one that is
responsible for the present look of the cathedral.
The architecture of the cathedral is really fascinating,
because at the time it was architectured by which was
classified as Gothic architecture. This architecture is
set out with highly advanced format as for it was
really hard work. The statues and stained glass
windows get their naturalism from the Romanesque
architecture. Notre Dame Cathedral was one of the
first structures that used the flying buttress. A buttress
is a arched exterior support which helps hold the
building.

There are ten bells in Notre Dame Cathedral, but the
main and largest one is Emanuel, the original bell
which is located on the south tower. The Emanuel
weighs just over 13 tons{13,000kg} and it is used for
a variety of special occasions or services. The other
recent bells are in the north tower and was meant to
replace the other nine that was damaged in the
revolution. These heavy bells once rung with hand,
but now are rung with electric motors controlled by
manual labour.
