Teaching Philosophy

Matt Logan

Learning and education is the first step in bringing about internal transformationfactors that lead to lasting
happiness
The Dalai Lama

This universally identifiable quote from the Dalai Lama is the fundamental basis for my teaching philosophy. It is my
belief that education provides the appropriate resources in order to create a successful and happy life. Pursuing a
career in teaching was an easy decision for me. It is something I am passionate about and believe I can contribute
significantly to the lives of our future generation by teaching the appropriate skills and knowledge required to live
prosperously in todays society. In establishing my personal teaching philosophy, it was important for me to reflect
on my own experiences and childhood memories that led to my decision to become a teacher. I have fond memories
of my schooling life, made significant by particular teachers and mentors that instilled me with great values I now
wish to impart on the next generation. This is my teaching philosophy.

My methodology to teaching starts with a holistic approach. Teachers must possess the requisite knowledge and
skills to adequately cater for a differentiated classroom with diverse cultural backgrounds, gender, ethnicity,
intellectual abilities and social skills. It is important to incorporate a vast range of strategies and techniques in order
to manage these diversities with a confident demeanour.

As a teacher, I will strive to gain the respect of all students through compassion, empathy and encouragement.
Building a strong rapport with the students is a vital step in creating a positive learning environment and motivating
growth. I hope to promote education in a positive light whereby students are encouraged to educate themselves
beyond the confines of a classroom. Its important to understand that education is a privilege and we, as a society,
need to utilise all the resources possible to educate ourselves for the betterment of the wider community.

Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world
Nelson Mandela

The world is rapidly changing due to factors such as technological advances and greater access to resources.
Teachers need to be on the forefront of this process and adapt appropriately. Students need skills to equip them to
handle these changes and make good, educated decisions in the future. In my opinion, teaching is much more than
managing a classroom of students. Teaching involves much greater responsibilities, including the instilment of life-
skills in order to tackle the outside world. I plan on imparting wisdom through my own life experiences and making
students aware of the vast opportunities and pathways we can take in order to successfully contribute to society and
create a better lifestyle for ourselves. A holistic approach to teaching will help develop a sustainable and productive
economy for our future generations.

On a localised level, I plan on working ethically, responsibly, and safely within the classroom. I will utilise the
resources available to me in terms of collaborating with colleagues and external professionals in the community. I
will have a great understanding of my subject areas and knowledge of curriculum requirements. I will provide
positive and constructive feedback to students in order to fuel growth and betterment for future reference.

To summarise, my goal as a teacher is to instil a passion for learning that extends past the classroom. I necessitate an
educational environment that encourages positivity and a strong motivation to learn. This requires a solid rapport
with mutual respect at the utmost importance. I plan to instil preparatory values pertinent to todays society
including responsibility, reliability, innovation, problem-solving, collaboration, disciplinary capabilities and a range of
effective communication skills in a variety to diverse settings. I want to challenge student to investigate pressing
global issues outside of their immediate proximity. I want to raise issues of equity and social justice, sustainability for
future environments, a greater sense of community and moral values including acceptance, care and compassion.
This involves stepping away from their comfort zone and valuing a broader outlook. Most importantly, I want to
make learning fun and desirable to stimulate creativity and encourage personal growth. I want to not only contribute
to the life of the school, but the wider community through taking full advantage of arising opportunities. It is my
genuine opinion that education is the key to a successful and happy life. Everyone deserves this privilege.
