Descriptor Use effective teaching strategies to integrate ICT into learning and teaching programs to make selected content relevant and meaningful. Rationale Today, everyone needs a basic understanding of ICT and how to make productive use of it, just to be good students, workers and citizens. Teaching students and ourselves how to be competent basic users of ICT technologies is an important role of ICT education, so we all will be successful in our academic and work careers, and so that we can efficiently participate in modern technical society. Examples of evidence The inquiry based project for LOTE Japanese described in Focus area 1.5 Differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities required studetns to use the teaching and learning program Blendspace (www.blendspace.com). Students had to imbed their Blendspaces with ICT teaching and learning activities, such as YouTube powerpoints or make their own videos and then upload them.
During my Practicum Google Earth and Google maps were often used as ICT teaching and learning aides throughout classes when geographical knowledge needed. This occurred in a year 7 English class when students were orienting themselves with the locations of where First World War took place. Year 8s learning about the Ottoman Empire History looked at interactive Maps showing the rise and fall of that empire as well as locating famous historical places. Year 9 Japanese students used Google earth to have an interactive tour of Tokyo locating places that knew of as well as using the tool to understand the importance of festivals in Japan.
Throughout my practicum the importance of and issues surrounding the use of ICT effectively and appropriately was continually raised by all stakeholders within the school. Prominent ICT issues involved cyber bullying, plagiarism, and the playing of games during class time. Relevant approaches to resolve these issues were presented by Victoria University Education students whose teaching method was ICT in our Humanities class.
