Sleight of Hand Directors Choice Award
10 min. by Michael Cusack, Adelaide, Australia.

Sleight of hand refers to skill in feats requiring quick and clever movements of the hands, especially
for entertainment or deception, as in juggling, and card or coin magic, and with the intent to trick or
deceive. Sleight of Hand is a stop-motion animated film about illusions. A man yearns to know his
place in the world and how he fits in, when sometimes it's better not to know.

Families Are Forever Jurys Citation Award
21 min. by Caitlin Ryan and Vivian Kleiman, San Francisco, CA.

Tom and Wendy are devout Mormon parents living in a conservative community. They attend
church every Sunday, obediently serving in their ward, as they raise their five children. They even
knock on doors to promote support for California's Proposition 8 created by opponents of same-
sex marriage. One day, Wendy reads her son Jordon's diary and discovers he is gay. Their lives are
changed forever as they struggle to understand and support the son that they love.

Spooners Directors Choice Award
13.5 min. by Bryan Horch, Pelham, MA.

A romantic comedy about two men and their epic quest for a grown-up bed. After finally convincing
his partner to retire their beloved futon, Nelson goes off by himself to shop for a proper
replacement. Spooners is a playful and humorous narrative film that brings to view the absurdities
and contradictions of modern life.

Watching, Waiting Directors Choice Award
11 min. by Wesley Strick, Los Angeles, CA.

At a women's health clinic, a small, dedicated staff goes to work in the face of a subtle but
pervasive sense of threat and danger. Watching, Waiting dramatizes an idealistic girl's first day of
volunteer work with these caring professionals. Meanwhile, beyond the clinic's secure confines, a
mysterious man is patiently watching and waiting. As the clock ticks and he moves from a hilltop
perch to a sniper's nest behind a grove of mesquite trees, the tension steadily mounts. This film is a
surprising look at the hot-button issue of women's reproductive rights by framing the controversy as
a taut, thriller.

5 Ways 2 Die Directors Choice Award
16.5 min. by Daina Papadaki, Nicosia, Cyprus.

How many ways are there to commit suicide? Can a suicide attempt be considered successful?
One cuckolded husband over-analyzes this subject, as he struggles to achieve his ideal result.

s-ara is a visual artist that spent endless hours shooting at monsters and strolling through mazes. So, it
only felt natural for her to evolve through an experimental and explorative process of the visual culture of
video games and popular gif files in her animations. She still plays old school computer games.

artist statement:
Video games are a pervasive media that are influencing a wide range of social and cultural practices, so
it only felt natural for Sandra Arajo to evoke them for inspirational source. The endless hours shooting
at monsters and strolling through mazes heavily influenced her discourse and aesthetic when she first
pursued photography as the medium of choice to complete her academic studies. Nevertheless, in a
single-shot image the visual and audio immersiveness of video games got lost in the threads of the
creative process. In order to achieve some of the interaction and game play qualities of video game she
became involved into 2D computer animation. That gave her the opportunity of mashing-up iconic video
game characters and scenarios with 8bit music. The gif format is also used for its animation abilities and
widespread browser integration. It also resembles game patterns and gives it a playfulness feel and
nonsense aura by splattering different mediums into a single-channel video screening. When trying to
sum up that work / play affair she says, "The main purpose is to create animations that evolve through an
experimental and explorative process of the visual culture of video games and the spread of popular gif
files. That aesthetic choice reflects and reiterates lo-fi quality and bug / glitch images of early computer
games.# She still plays old school video games. Sandra Arajo is a visual artist undergoing the MA in
Artistic Studies Theory and Critic of Art program at Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Porto. Her
experimental animations have been screened mostly in independent film and new media festivals across

ZWEIBETTZIMMER (Double Occupancy)
09:23 by Fabian Giessler, Germany

synopsis
Two old men share a hospital room, in which the window is the only connection to the outside world and
thus becomes a highly demanded resource. "Double Occupancy" is a parable about the greed of man -
an animated intimate play about the power of imagination and illusion.

the Bauhaus-University. He lives in Weimar together with his wife and little son.

director's note
The Screenplay is based on a short story by German author Wolfdietrich Schnurre (1920-1989) - The
story about a universal conflict between two static characters was inspiring! I decided to create an
animation that reflects a problem of today's society: The greed of man. For me it was even more than
that the story circles around a self-reflexive layer about storytelling and the power of imagination. On
the other hand I wanted to show human abysses: What is the slightest difference between two people
that causes the desire for killing?

Umbrella Factory
4:00 by Lexie Findarle Trivundza & Nick Trivundza,

synopsis
The Umbrella Factory is an animated short film based on the horror short story, The Monkeys Paw, by
W.W. Jacobs. It is about a traveler that one evening knocked upon the door of three brothers. Asking
for a place to stay, as he has nowhere else to go, he offers them his magic talisman for payment in
exchange for room and board to come in out of the pouring rain. What the brothers learn is that the
talisman is capable of granting three wishes. But they must be careful for what they wish for. The
Umbrella Factory was created by Naissance creative lab and directed by Lexie and Nick Trivundza. It
perfectly resembles the horror story with classic drawn characters in animation. The music is a strong
factor in creating its macabre mood, also the alternation of colors in the general scheme is very fluidly
completing the narrative part.
