Breaking News:
As some of us might know stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop
into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. n addition,
in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially
without limit to replenish other cells, as long as the person or animal is still alive.
When a stem cell divides each new cell has the potential to either remain a
stem cell or become a different type of cell with a more specialized function. For
example a muscle cell, red blood cell, or a brain cell. Why do we tell you this?
Cause it has been reported that at Hospital of San Fernando they believe that
stem cell research holds extraordinary promises for the people of San Fernando
we treat and for others around the world. The mission of the stem cell program
at Hospital of San Fernando is to explore, understand, and to get more hospitals
into stem cell research. So do you support them? How would this affect you? Will
this be a medical break through? Read on to find out in this special edition of the
San Fernando Times all about stem cells.

Stem Cells to the Rescue!
As we have said earlier stem cells can save lives. For example is Dervish Grady.
who had bone marrow cancer. When he received his first adult stem cell
transplant in September 2007. The cancer attacked his bones extremely severely
that it looked like someones target practice. Once chemotherapy destroyed his
cancer immune system, doctors at Hospital of San Fernando gave Dervish cells
obtained from his own blood. The cells traveled through his bloodstream into his
bone marrow, establishing a new, cancer-free immune system. When signs of
the cancer returned 4 years later he received another treatment in September
2011. Dervish says "The truth is that adult stem cells saved his life and are
saving thousands as we speak. f it weren't for adult stem cells would of.. would
of passed away before my child was born. He got emotional and had to stop.
The point is that adult stem cells saved his life and is thankful.
Featured story:
n San Francisco April 25, 2011, a scientist at the Gladstone nstitutes has made
two significant stem cell discoveries that advance medicine and human health by
creating powerful new approaches for using cells and stem cell like technology.
n the first of two papers Sheng Ding, PhD, describes new methods to use
embryonic stem cells to develop large numbers of neural stem cells, which are
early staged cells that can later develop into a variety of types of brain cells. With
traditional stem cells development techniques, neural stem cells remain at this
early stage for only a short time, and so cannot produce enough new cells to be
practical for biomedical use.
Reviews:
Panorama BBC Documentary about Stem cells & Miracles is about a young girl (Dekota
Clark) who was almost born blind. She was told not to check the nternet but she did.
but instead of fear they found hope. the nternet through out suggestions like stem cells.
When they decided go with stem cells they decided to go to the clinic Beike Biotech
in China. When they found out how much it would cost (25,000 pounds plus traveling
extras) they had to raise money them selves. This video is highly recommended.
Should stem cell research
be funded?
The argument on funding for stem cells has provoked America. There are a
lot of people who agree with the funding and the is a lot who don't. On March,
2009, President Barack H. Obama issued Executive Order, removing barriers to
responsible scientific research involving human stem cells. The Executive Order
states that the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Director
of NIH, may support and conduct responsible, scientifically worthy human stem
cell research, including human embryonic stem cells research, to the extent
permitted by law.

Letter to the Editor:
We recently received a letter from a concerned American about funding for
stem cell research. This person thinks that stem cell research is the most
promising aspect of medicine today, and that it is the obligation of the US federal
government to fund this research. This person says " it doesn't make any sense
for the government to hold religion over science".

Advice Section:
If you are having trouble understanding stem cells you should know that many
other people share your struggle. If you need advise for stem cell problems you
should know that despite the enormous therapeutic potential for stem cells to
treat a vast array of serious diseases there are still concerns about potentially
dangerous results. Scientists are excited about the possibility of curing diseases,
there are fears regarding unexpected results and effects from stem cell usage.

Sports:
Doctors and researchers say that in a few years the use of primitive stem cells
from infants' umbilical cord blood could grow new knee ligaments or elbow
tendons, creating a gene therapy that becomes the vanguard of sport injury
repair. already some sports agents are preparing to advise clients about banking
stem cells from their offspring or from tissue taken from their own bodies as an
insurance policy against a career- ending infirmity.
