Year 8 Lesson Plan No. 1 Group Members: Autumn Jay-Ly. Focus of this lesson: Energy Conversion/Energy Analysed: Project Lesson Plan Number: Week 10 Monday Period 6 Lesson 1 of 2 Location/Setting: Science Lab G14 No. of Students: 27 Length of Class: 48 min 2:10 to 3:00pm Organisation/ Student Groups:
Students work collaboratively to design a simple systems machine that explores energy transformation, conservation and efficiency. Classroom management strategy: Teacher begins the class by standing at the front of the room and explaining the goals for the day. Teacher allows students the freedom to migrate between groups and exchange ideas. They are responsible for providing feedback to peers. Teacher demonstrates the activity on a computer and does it step by step on a projector screen. Teacher monitors and observes throughout the lesson, commenting on students work frequently.
Materials, Resources, Equipment, References/Sources: Laptop. Socrative Application for Quizz component. iBrainstorm for Design component. Projector for demonstration. Presentation demonstration document Project Experiment. Assumed/ known prior art learning of students: Students have basic knowledge in energy transfer and conservation from week 1 -8 Students have competent skills in starting, reviewing, evaluating experiments from week 5-8: conservation of energy Students have prior knowledge in energy transformation and efficiency from week 1-5
Goals Students look at energy efficient housing design and complete calculations for energy types, energy efficiency and energy conversions Experiment: Students design an experiment investigating a feature of an energy efficient house e.g. thermal conductivity of building materials Conduct a web search on one aspect of energy efficient housing e.g. relationship between height of window, latitude and width of eaves that will provide summer shade and passive solar heating in winter Percentage Energy Efficiency Worksheets: calculations of percentage energy efficiency. Differentiated levels of difficulty involving easier calculations, visual cues and more accessible language
Arts Learning intentions for this particular class: The aims of the lesson; Students work in teams to design and demonstrate a working machine, completing a task in the home with more energy efficiency: demonstrating different forms of energy and explaining how energy transfers and transformations cause change in simple systems using appropriate language and representations to communicate science ideas, methods and findings identifying and constructing questions and problems that they can investigate scientifically plan experiments, identifying variables to be changed, measured and controlled Work collaboratively to identify questions and problems in relation to energy, and conduct investigations and report results
INTRODUCTION MAIN BODY CONCLUSION Teacher Responsibility Mins Teacher Responsibility Mins Teacher Responsibility Mins Refer to lesson learning objectives and outcome. Explain the first component of the exercise- Design experiment Show an illustrative demonstration of the design experiment Wacky Connections and work collaboratively to improve outcome. Enlist questions students are to consider throughout the task; machine have? the weight is released? transformation that occurs.

Separate class in teams of 4. Ask students if they are clear on the instructions. And send them to their desks and brainstorm [ICT iBrainstorm] Ask students to work on the design illustrative component through ICT iBrainstorm on a touch screen monitor [iPad linked to each other]. Walk around and monitor students work. Provide individual feedback.

Project: Energy Transformations Rube Goldberg Challenge
A written report outlining the development process is submitted. Illustrative drafts and works from ICT to be printed and submitted. Final poster presentation including annotations. 3 Minute presentation on their machine project.
ICT-
iBrainstorm- freeform drawing connect to phones or ipads collate ideas from multiple users simultaneously
Socrative- Teacher custom device for quizzes Students respond from their phone or ipad Separates data into different formats for assessment and review
