Note: Not all lesson plans will include all the components listed below and the components will not always
be in the order shown. If a component is not included, a brief explanation should be inserted at the
appropriate point in the plan where that component would normally fit.

The setting:
Class Description:
23 students in the 4th grade classroom.

11 boys and 12 girls

6 are Hispanic, 1 African American, and 16 are Caucasian

1 student has an IEP and another is under evaluations for an IEP, 2 students have ADHD.

The school as a whole has 46% of the students on free or reduced lunch

Classroom Physical Setting:
- The desks are set into groups of 4
- A board is in the front and back of the room
- 2 smaller tables are in the back of the room
- A large classroom library in on the side of the room
- A sink and countertop with the turn in basket are on the opposite side to the library

2. Lesson Goals, Outcomes, Objectives: Describe what you expect students to be able to do, to achieve,
including:

2.1 Instructional Objectives: -
The students will create a topographical map and identify features of maps. (Cognitive, application,
synthesis, 4.G.1 )
2.2 Relevant local district/state/common core standard(s) - (ksde.org):
Geography (G) Read various types of maps for grid systems, symbols, legends, scales, compass rose,
directions, longitude, latitude, and hemisphere.

3. Assessment: How and when will you determine the extent to which students have achieved the
lesson objectives?
The students created and identified features of maps with 80% accuracy and 100% participation.
4. Adaptations:
4.1 Gearing down
The teacher gives the students a partially filled in map with blank areas to identify and a word bank
of vocabulary words .
Gearing up
The teacher will ask the students to construct a drawing of more than one kind of map. The
students will be challenged to identify directions.
Integration:

7. Instructional Design Teaching Plan
7.1 Introduction
a. Anticipatory Set
The teacher will show the students a video of a topographic map and how it mimics the earths
surface.
b. Communication of Objectives:
Today we are going to learn about maps! We will make our own maps and talk about how they
can be used. Lets get started!
*7.2. Input
The teacher will show the video of the topographical map. The teacher will then show examples of
real maps. The teacher will then orally explain the different features of a map. The students will
then create their own maps that can be to a made up world or their own neighborhood. The teacher
will then have the students present their maps and talk about all the features of the maps.
*7.3 Modeling
The teacher will model example of maps that contain all of the components that maps need. The
teacher will model example of different kinds of maps so the students can see how maps can serve
different purposes.
*7.4 Guided Practice
The teacher will ask the students the vocabulary terms discussed in the lesson. The teacher will
project a map on the Smartboard and the students will underline and label the different parts of the
map.
*7.5 Checks for Understanding
The teacher will ask the students to place a note over a part of their map while they are creating it to
point out one of the features.
7.6 Independent Practice/Assignment
The students will complete a map that includes all the different components needed for a map
independently. The students will then share the maps and if time allows the students will create a
map of the school in teams of 5 and then see if other teams can follow their maps.
7.7. Closure, wrap-up
The teacher will review the lesson and the students will present their maps. As a at home challenge
the students can create different kinds of maps and see if their family can follow the maps.
