This letter is written in support of Dr. Kathy Theuer as she seeks promotion to the rank of Professor.
Dr. Theuer and I have worked side by side through the various versions of what is now Brandman
Universitys School of Education. Dr. Theuer has been a leader as we have navigated significant federal,
state, and university changes as they relate to our programs.

This leadership has taken many forms. Prior to officially becoming a leader in the School of Education,
Dr. Theuer helped to lead the Faculty Personnel Committee as we began to implement changes to the
processes we were using. Many of those changes are still in place today. As the Teaching Performance
Assessments became a part of our lives, she took the lead in providing the first in-services to faculty
about these new assessments. Having an informed and consistent faculty is critical to the universities
evaluation mechanisms and Dr. Theuer volunteered to lead the way.
Consequently, it is not too surprising that her unofficial leadership led to her official leadership. Dr.
Theuer became the Associate Dean for the Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Master of Arts in
Teaching programs. At the time, our data analysis consisted of instructors at all of our campuses copying
student assignments and mailing them in for evaluation. Dr. Theuer led the move to utilize LiveText
which has allowed us to have phenomenal resources for evaluating our programs and to ensure
consistency across all of our campuses. This is a vital issue to have addressed for CTC accreditation. As
a member of the Board of Institutional Reviewers, she dedicated countless hours to the review of the
credential programs from other universities. Her knowledge of accreditation led to her becoming our
Director of Accreditation. The wealth of information she possesses about accreditation in California and
now nationally is a great asset to our university.
As the university moved to blended and online learning, Dr. Theuer led the charge within the School of
Education. One innovation that I believe came directly from her was the use of synchronous meetings as
a component to our online classes. This component dramatically improved the communication and
quality of our courses that are taught in the online format.
As if the many hats that Dr. Theuer wears is not enough, she has also taken a leadership role in the
development of numerous courses, including: EDUU 350, 510, 511, 512, 513, 514, 606, 610, 611, and
EDMU 525.
As you go down the line of qualities we look for, her instruction, currency in our discipline, contributions
to our assurance of learning, program development, instructional innovations, faculty mentoring, and
internal service are of the highest level. That is why I support her promotion to Professor of Education.
Sincerely,

David L. Sloan, Ed.D.
