Unit- Im Wrapped!
Collaborative Task #3

Group members:

*** The following activities need to be completed as a group. All members MUST
contribute to this task and MUST have a copy of this on their Weebly.

Steps 1-4 need to be completed prior to the lesson allocated to creating your
installation sculpture (step 5).
Your group MUST document your artmaking process when creating the sculpture,
the finished product and its deconstruction.
Steps 6 and 7 are to be completed after the creation of your sculpture.

PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY COMPLETE ALL
COMPONENTS.

STEP 1: THE BRIEF
In your groups you are to create an Installation sculpture.
You are to adopt the artmaking practice of Ai Weiwei to create your sculpture.
The following rules apply:
You must choose a SITE that is available within the school environment
You may use materials of your choice; make your teacher away of the
materials you intend to use ASAP.
Some materials will be made available, however, you may also need to
source some materials yourself.
You cannot make a permanent mark on the environment. All components
of your sculpture must be deconstructed and the site left exactly as it was
prior to the creation of your sculpture.
Themes your group should consider in order to reveal a link to the artmaking
practice of Ai Weiwei:
Activating the senses
Social, political and cultural links to society
Consumerist society and mass production
Value and worth vs. aesthetic quality

STEP 2: RESEARCH
In your group:
1. Select THREE Ai Weiwei sculptures that appealed to your group the most.
Copy and paste these into your brief (within title, date, materials).

2. Identify the concept/theme he is attempting to explore within these
sculptures (see brief above for hints).
The theme that he is trying to explore though these artworks is that he is
challenging the role of the gallery by how hes using objects in our
everyday lives and creating them into artworks.
3. Explain why these sculptures work well within the site.
These works well within the site because there is enough room for the
instillation works to be created and they are in places that people can go
to see them.
4. Discuss how your group might use one or more of these sculptures as
inspiration for your own sculpture.
We might use one of these sculptures as inspiration because it shows how
artworks can also be made out of every day objects and they can be as
big or as small as the artist wants.

STEP 3: IDEAS
1. Produce THREE different design concepts that you may like to explore
through your installation sculpture.
1. Smashed up toys under a mobile
2. Smashed toys around a baby holding a phone
3. Smashed toys around a phone
2. Create a concept sketch for each design concept.
3. Name each of these design concepts and explain how you think you will
go about exploring and creating these design concepts.
1. Technology > Toys
2. Technology controlling our babies
3.
Select the concept design your group will explore in your installation sculpture.
Your final design may include design features from any of your previous design
concepts.
1. Label the materials within your design concept.
Technology > Toys
- coat hangers, string, sticky tape, hammer, toys, old mobile phones
2. Justify your groups selection of this design concept.

Making and Meaning:
When making this sculpture, we used the toys and ruined them with a hammer.
We then scattered the broken up toys under the tree and we created the baby
mobile. We created it by attaching 2 coat hangers and adding sticky tape, and
we then attached string to the fake/old mobile phones. We then attached the
string to the coat hangers so that it then looks like a real baby mobile. We hang
to mobile up in the tree over all the broken boys to have the purpose that
technology in the society today is taking over the kids and they would rather sit
down and use an ipad or other technology rather than run around outside or
play with their toys.

STEP 4: PLANNING AND PRODUCTION
1. Photograph the site you will be working with.
3. List the tools, materials and resources you will need in order to create your
installation.
- Coat hangers, string, sticky tape, hammer, toys, old mobile phones,
scissors
2. Explain how your sculpture explores a theme similar to that of Ai Weiwei.
It explores a theme similar to Aw Weiwei by how were using every day
materials not expected materials such as paints and canvass.
3. Describe how your sculpture transforms the original site and provokes a
change in thought about the original site and objects used.
It changes the original site by how its turning a tree, into an artwork for
people to look and interact with.
4. List the steps your group will follow to create the sculpture within the 1-
hour lesson provided.
1. Smash the toys under the tree
2. Make a baby mobile by having 2 coat hangers taped together with
sticky tape
3. Hang mobiles from the coat hangers
4. Put the mobile from the tree above the toys
5. Photograph the artowkr
5. State how you intend to document your sculpture- during the physical
making stages, the finished product and the deconstruction of your
sculpture. How do you intend to present your documentation?
We indeed on documenting the sculpture by photographing how we
made it, what it looked like in the start to what it looked like in the end.

STEP 5: MAKING
During the allocated lesson, demonstrate that you are following safe work
practices and can work well in a team.
Your final installation may change slightly during the making process to account
for site changes, weather conditions etc. With this said, the link to the practice of
Ai Weiwei must still be evident.
Use the camera provided to document your artmaking process.

STEP 6: ICT/ DOCUMENTATION
The documentation of your sculpture is your only proof that the artwork ever
existed.
Your group will need to present your documentation to the class in a way that is
well considered and aesthetically pleasing.
You MUST use stills, however, you may also include a video element.

STEP 7: EVALUATION
Each group member must complete an evaluation of your Installation sculpture.
This is to be completed individually.
Evaluation of our Installation Sculpture
The Sculpture.
1. In our installation sculpture we used the following materials
- Coat hangers, sticky tape, scissors, toys, hammer, old mobile phones,
string
2. We chose to use these materials because they symbolise the following
ideas in the following ways
they are simply but are creative and they create an artwork with a good
meaning.
3. We attached these materials together using
String, sticky tape
4. We chose to use the site we did because
It is a place that everyone will see the artwork
5. This site enhanced our ideas because
Its in the bus bay and its a popular place that everyone is able to see the
artwork.
6. In our design we transformed the original site in the following ways
We turned it into a baby play area so that changed it from a schools bus
bay
7. Changing the site in this way aimed to provoke the following changes in
thought (Of the site and objects used)
It was aimed to try and change peoples minds.
8. Our final sculpture changed from our original design concept in the
following ways
It changed by how we had many different ideas yet we ended up doing
it with not as many toys as expected
9. What areas of the sculpture do you think work the best? Why?
I think that the toys and the handing phones will work better than the
mobile itself due to the mobile not being seen as well.
10. If you had the opportunity to create the sculpture again, what areas of the
sculpture would you attempt to improve? Why?
I would make sure that there were more toys and more mobiles to make it
stand out more
11. How do you think you could go around improving these features?
We could have all spent more time collecting used and old toys, and old
phones that didnt work and more coat hangers.

Documentation.
12. How do your photographs (and video) enhance the ideas you were
exploring in your sculpture? They enhance it by having the photos to
prove how it turned out.
13. In what ways could these be improved?
We could have taken more up-close and focused shots of the work, and
more of the work from a distance.
Working collaboratively.
14. What were the challenges of working in a team? The challenges were
that not everyone was there during the making, and some people just
stood around and watched.
15. How could these be addressed (and eliminated) in the future? We could
try to work better as a team and to try and make it so everyone was there
16. What were the positives of working in a team?
The ones who did contribute, worked really well as a team, we all
contributed different ideas
17. What strategies did you find helped promote positive working relationships
and productivity when working collaboratively?
Be fair and try to combine everyone ideas together and let everyone
have a go at working on the artwork
18. How did you approach to this collaborative task change from your last
task? We approached it with a wider imagination since we were able to
use any materials and make up any ideas for it
19. How would you approach a collaborative task in the future?
We would approach it by having more materials to work with
