withtheUnitedKingdomandChina,theUnitedStatecalledforJapantosurrenderforcesin
thePotsdamDeclarationonJuly26,1945orelsetheywoulddestroyJapan.Japandidnt
answerthem.ThentheUnitedStatesstartedtheManhattanProjecttomaketheatomic
bombs.USmadetwoatomicbomb.AbombcalledLittleBoywasdroppedonHiroshimain
august6,1945,thendroppedabombcalledFatManonthecityofNagasakiinaugust9,
1945.Onaugust15,1945,justdaysafterthebombingofNagasaki,japanannouncedits
surrender.Peoplestillwonderifthebombsmadethemsurrenderandifitwasagoodchoice
tousethebomb.

AboutHiroshima

Itwasanimportantcitybecausethearmiesandtheeconomyaretheresomost
peopleandbuildingsareinthecity.ThepopulationofHiroshimahadreachedapeakofover
381,000earlierinthewarbutpriortotheatomicbombing,bythejapanesegovemment.At
thetimeoftheattack,thepopulationwasapproximately340,000350,000.

Atomicbombdevelopment

Atthefirst,theUSnotveryinterestingabouttheatomicbombsothephysicistSzilard,
Wigner,TellertryingtotellEinsteinthatgermanyatomicbombworkmaystartsotheywant
EinsteintowritealettertopresidentRooseveltbecausetheywantUStomakeatomicbomb
toosotheycanfightGermany,alsopeoplethinkEinsteinisgreatestscientistsinthisworldso
noonecanignorehisadvicesothePhysicistsaskedhim.Einsteindecidetowritealetterto
presidentRooseveltaboutUSshouldmakeatomicbomb.PresidentRooseveltisverylike
Einstein,sowhenhegottheletterfromEinsteinhedecidedtomakeatomicbombbefore
Germanydo.Thefirstresearchbeganin1939,originallyinfearthattheGermanatomicbomb
projectwoulddevelopatomicweaponsfirst.WiththedefeatofGermanyinmay1945,plants
shiftedtousingthebombagainstjapan.

Afterthebombing

USdroppedthebombtoHiroshimaatAugust6,1945.Over90%ofthedoctorsand
93%ofthenursesinHIroshimawerekilledorinjuredmosthadbeeninthedowntownarea
whichreceivedthegreatestdamage.Thehospitalsandtheallthebuildingsweredestroyed
orheavilydamaged.90,000166,000peoplewerekilledinHiroshima.WhenEinsteinheard
aboutHiroshimaandnagasakigotbombedheisverysurprised.Hesaidheisveryregret,
regretthatheshouldnotwritethatlettertopresidentRoosevelt.Thecityofoutsideof
hiroshimawerenotgotbombedbutthedirtcantgrowplantsalsotheairwerenotgood
becausethebombdroppedinoneplacebutthewindandthecloudpushthebadchemicalto
anotherplaceandthenitrainintothedirt,thebadchemicalgotintothegroundsothedirt
cantgrowanyplants.Peoplecalledthatblackrain.Twoyearsafterthebombing.The
groundfinallygrownsesameseedsbutitonlyhavetheplantitdonthavetheseeds.

USandjapanarefriendnow.IfEinsteindoesn'twriterthelettertopresident
Roosevelt,ifUSdoesn'tdevelopmentthebombproject,thenthewargonnabebiggerthan
whatitwasin1945,alsothejapanwontsurrender.Einsteindontneedtoberegretbecause
Ifhedoesntwrittenthatletterproposalletter,andlaterthedevelopmentofsciencebutalso
makeothersmadesimilarproposals,buttheadventofnuclearweaponswouldbeyearslater
nothing.Ifsomeoneuseatomicbombtofightthenextwar,Thenthenextnextwarpeoplewill
onlyuseastick.Ifbombareusedagainthebadpartwillspreadfartoothersideofearth.
Evenmorefrighteningisthatnuclearexplosionscloudsblockingthesunwillbealongtime,
thetemperaturewillgodownfastandmakeaglobal'nuclearwinter,'alltheworld'scropwill
bedead,peoplewillstarvetodeath.SoifeveryoneinthisworldProhibittheuseandeventual
eliminationofnuclearweaponsthentheearthwillbesaved.
