Historical Note- Industrial Arts Collection at Emporia State University
In 1879 Emma Fridley offered courses in Industrial drawing, and in 1880 the university course was added
to the course catalog. In 1890 University President A.R. Taylor developed a course outline.
In 1897 the Drawing Department expanded under Ada Hogle to meet the growing demand for manual
training of teachers in cities. Beginning in 1904 a manual training certificate was awarded to graduates of
the program. By 1918 the Drawing Department was referred to as Industrial Arts.
Steady growth continued until World War II began and as a result of the smaller student body the
program was suspended from Fall semester 1945 to Fall semester 1947 when E.L. Barnhart became the
department head.
