1. Focus and Review

I will start out the lesson by asking the students What are some
different types of text structures? I will then write the different text
structures on the board (using boxes & bullets) Compare & Contrast,
Problem & Solution, Description, Sequence & Order, & Cause &
Effect.

4. Guided Practice

Time
~ 2 min

~1
minute

After telling the students what well be doing today, I will ask the
~ 10 min
students to gather on the carpet (by the whiteboard) and read The
Roanoke Colony (level S book) and model writing notes by reading
couple of sentences and pointing out what I would include in my notes
so I can review it later on. I will read for couple of minutes and model
taking notes (taking no more than 10 mins) and going over key words
in identifying text structure. I will make sure to point out to the students
that you have to read the whole text in order to identify the text
structure.
I will then tell the students that they will be reading Non-fiction books
~ 25 min
and taking notes on what they read and identifing what type of text
structure their book (pointing to the list) is. I will then tell the students
the group name and call the students out by their group (Eagles, Hawks,
Humming Birds, & Parrots) and have them pick up their books and
their group mascot and go to their assigned spot. The New-comer
group will be reading Spanish books, identify whether it is Fiction or
Non-fiction, and write notes in English.
Each students will be grouped by the reading level each student is in.

Then each student will be given a Non-fiction book according to their

level and take notes and identify whether the text is a Sequence &
Order, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, Problem & Solution, or
Description.
