Course Logistics

Course Title: Architectural Styles and Features


Course Overview:
This course is intended to broaden your experiences as an observer in the built environment. As a
designer it is important to demonstrate your ability in identifying key styles and features of
architectural history. Although architectural styles can be numerous, this course focuses on
architectural styles fluent in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The course will teach
identifying features of each style presented. The goal of the class is to introduce you to particular
architectural styles and movements, and enable you to recall and elaborate the various styles
presented using identifying features.
Couse Delivery:
The course will be delivered through an online learning management system. The organization of
the learning management system will consist of resources, assignments, quizzes, and a
discussion forum. The learning management system will be used throughout the course delivery
and all assignments should be submitted through the system by the due date and time. Each
student is assigned login information through the school. The administration of login information
is the students responsibility and login issues should be resolved before the first day of
instruction. Students are expected to login to the learning management system three times a week
to check any updates or announcements pertaining to assignments or the course.

Access to the Internet is vital to the success of this class.
Instructor Information:
I can be reached during the day through the messenger system provided through the LMS, as
well as email. Communication will be answered within one day excluding weekends. Feed-back
for assignments will be received within I week after the submission deadline. During my office
hours Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 1-4 pm, I can be reach by telephone as well.
Course Policies:
Attendance for the class should be active and regular. As noted earlier, allow time to login to the
LMS a minimum of three times a week to check for announcements. Required participation for
discussion and collaborative learning should be completed on time and with the respect of the
learners involved. Various technology uses for collaborative learning are encouraged in this
class. Be prepared to try new techniques for learning. Homework for the class is due by the date
and time noted in the assignment. Homework submissions will not be accepted late with the
exception made by the instructor. If circumstances arise the learner should notify and make
arrangements with the instructor no later than two days before the assignment is due.

Instructional Activities:

Week 1: Module 1- The Arts and Crafts Movement


Required Readings:
LMS reading found in the Resources for Module 1. Chapter 1from the textbook.
Assignments: Create an architectural style timeline of the Arts & Crafts movement. Include
major events, architects, and inventions, which changed the way architecture was designed and
sparked the arts and crafts movement. Include images along your timeline. Be brief in your
descriptions of each year in the timeline. Share your timeline with the class through the Module
1 submissions. View at least three classmates timelines and comment on anything you find
interesting, or facts you might have missed when creating your own timeline. To create your
timeline I ask that you use a Prezi.
Create a free account at www.prezi.com, and be sure to make your Prezi public. Use the Prezi
comment area to add your comments on other presentations. When submitting your Prezi please
cpy and paste your URL of your timeline. I have included an example Prezi for your reference.

Week 2: Module 2-The NeoClassicalism Movement


Required Readings:
LMS reading found in the Resources for Module 2. Chapter 2 from the textbook.

Assignments: Create three videos using the Show Me App educating an observer the key features
of the Neoclassical Style. Each video must include different examples of the NeoClassical Style.
Each video should be 4-6 min in length, and should include an image of the style, and audio
explaining the identifying features observed in the image. In addition each video must include
the pen tools pointing, highlighting or circling the identifying features. I have included a example
in the Resources for Module 2 for your reference. Share your video with the class via the

discussion tab. View at least 2 classmates submissions, and provide a critique of the video. Your
video critique should address content as well as video quality for learning. Your critique should
be 100-200 words and posted the discussion.

Week 3 Module 3-Ranch, Federalism & Victorian Movements


Required Readings:
Chapter 3 & 4 from the textbook.
Assignments: Architectural Styles Report
Directions: Choose one style of architecture realated to the reading, can be Ranch Style,
Federalist, or Victorian.
Write a min. of two-page paper on the following topics
Topics
1. Style of house
2. Describe the Floor Plan of the house
3. When did this house appear most often in history
4. What influenced the style
5. What are the characteristics of the house
6. Famous Architects who designed in this style
7. Why did you choose this style?
8. Etc.
Extra: include example of pictures either from the Internet or from a digital camera. (Note:
Pictures do are not included in the two page report).
NOTE: CREATE A BIBLIOGRAPHY LIST OF WEBSITES AND TEXT USED

Week 4 Module 4: Movements in Asia


Required Readings:
Magazine Article located in the Resources for Module 4 in the LMS. Chapter 5 from the
textbook.
Assignments: Collaborative Style ID Poster (refer to the LMS for your group members contact
information).

Directions: The class will be broken up into groups of 2 to 3 students, and the student labeled as
the team organizer should make initial contact via email to the group 7 days before the due date.
The goal of this project is to do the following:
1. Find 2-3 pictures of each of 10 different style mentioned in the readings. You may use
the Internet, magazines or take digital photos of homes for this project.
2. Once the pictures are assembled in digital form, the group will share the pictures with
each other. Consider using Google Drive to create a public folder for the images
gathered. The team organizer will need to create a Glogster education account and
provide login information to the group. The glogster website is used to create digital
posters and is free to use. www.glogster.edu
3. Your group's digital poster board should include the following
a. Title of project: Building Identification, Architectural Styles, etc.
b. Pictures of each building added to the digital board
c. Title of styles underneath the pictures of the examples found.
d. Under the title of the project list 3 to 4 main characteristics of each style that can
be identified.
4. Organize the poster board using the design princples and elements. Create a visually
stunning and infomative poster.
The team organizer should submit the final poster to the assignment by the due date and time.

Week 5 Module 5: Movements in Europe


Required Readings:
Video located in the Resources for Module 5 in the LMS. Chapter 7 &8 from the textbook.
Assignments: Create a field guide for a tourist wanted to participate in an architectural walking
tour of London.
Create a guide that includes information about 10 different architectural sites/styles that can be
visited. Your field guide should include ten different stops that the pedestrian can easily locate.
The guide should include information about the various architectural styles that can be found in
London. Each stop should cover a new style and infomation in identifying the particular style
should be included in the field guide. Include high quality iamges that will aid in the pedstrian
identifying the architectural stop. Include interesting and or little known facts about the places
visited for added interest. Your completed guide should be assembled in a two column layout
and should be between 4-6 pages when complete. Write your descriptions narrativley as if you
are there with the pededstrian completing the walking tour beside them.
Submit your field guide as a pdf to the LMS by the due date and time.

Week 6 Module 6: Final Review


Required Readings:
Chapter 10 in the textbook and the magazine article located in the Resources for Module 6
Assignment:
After having had a chance to about six different types of historic architectural designs, you are
going to choose the one you like the best. Imagine that you have just won the lottery, and you
can build a new home in your schools neighborhood. Because of the zoning laws, you can only

build a home that follows one of the six types of architectural design we have covered in the
previous assignments. Your task is to explain in a short letter to the local architect who is going
to help design your house, what specific design elements and features you want you house to
have. Remember what you have learned about each architectural style, and the design elements
that were common to them. Be sure to use proper grammar and punctuation when writing this
letter. Your letter should be 4-6 pages in length and include a desired floor plan and your
aesthetic preferences. Include lots of images to get your design intentions across.
Complete the discussion below using Answer Garden by the due date.
Why Do Housing Styles Change Over Time?Quickly brainstorm some reasons for why housing
styles change over time, and why people do not all live in the same type of house. Be prepared
for your answers to be seen by all participants.
