Parents:
Sayings and Phrases are important to study because they are widely used in everyday language
and writing--and their meanings are not always immediately clear. Students may have heard sayings
and phrases used in conversation at home, in school, on television or radio programs, or in cartoons,
films, and video-tapes. Children in Core Knowledge schools should also have studied sayings and
phrases in kindergarten and Grade 1. Please spend time with your child reading and discussing the
meaning of the following sayings:

1. Back to the drawing board.

2. Better late than never.
3. Cold feet.
4. Dont cry over spilled milk.
5. Don't judge a book by its cover.
6. Easier said than done.
7. Eaten out of house and home.
8. Get a taste of your own medicine.
9. Get up on the wrong side of the bed.
10. In hot water.
11. Keep your fingers crossed.
12. Practice what you preach.
13. Two heads are better than one.
14. Turn over a new leaf.
15. Where there's a will there's a way.
16. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
17. Sour grapes.
18. A dog is mans' best friend.
19. Better safe than sorry.
