PRESENT CONTINUOUS

TENSE

Functions:
Present Continuous Tense expresses an activity that is in
progress at the moment of the speaking.
- John is sleeping right now.
- I need an umbrella because it is raining.
- John and Mary are talking on the phone.
Often the activity is of a general nature; something generally
in progress this week, this month, this year.
- I am taking five courses this semester.
- John is trying to improve his work habits.
- She is writing another book this year.

Kinds of Sentence
Nominal Sentence is a sentence which doesnt show
activity. This kind of sentence uses to be + being and it
may be followed by adjectives, nouns, and / or adverbs.

The Formula of Nominal Sentence:


Example:
- Tom is being foolish.
- Tom is being a translator.
- Tom is being in the library.

(+) S + to be + being + Noun / Adjective / Adverb.


( -) S + to be + being + not + Noun / Adjective / Adverb.
(?) To be + S + being + Noun / Adjective / Adverb?

Verbal Sentence is a sentence which shows activity. This


kind of sentence uses to be + verb 1 + ing.
Example:
- She is calling her father now.
- The doctor is checking his patient now.
- Is he going to the hospital now?
The Formula of Nominal Sentence:

(+) S + to be + Verb 1 + ing + O / C.


( -) S + to be + not + Verb I + ing + O / C.
(?) To be + S + Verb I + ing + O / C?
