Storage

Devices
Magnetic Storage
Definition/Characteristics: media and devices store data in the form of tiny magnetised dots.
How it works: the dots make magnetic fields created by electro magnets.
Examples of Devices/Media: hard drive and magnetic disc.

Solid State
Definition/Characteristics: it has no moving parts so no discs or anything.
How it works: the data stored on a solid state backing storage is rewritable.
Examples of Devices/Media: memory sticks, flash memory cards and SSDs.

Optical
Definition/Characteristics: a method of reading and writing data to discs using lasers.
How it works: it has a laser which reads the disc and then does something with it.
Examples of Devices/Media: CDs and DVDs.

Storage Methods
Youve looked a lot at storage methods and what storage devices are used for. But you havent looked at how the
data is actually stored and accessed on a device.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is SEQUENTIAL storage/Access? It has access to a computer data file.
2. Give one storage device/media that uses the sequential method of file storage. Backup tape.
3. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of sequential method of file storage. An advantage is that it is
very simple to retrieve your data. A disadvantage is that it is slow when hit rate is low.

4. What is Random Access? Where nothing is in order and it just picks anything at random.
5. Give one storage device/media that uses the Random Access method of storage. RAM
6. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of the Random Access method of storage. An advantage is that it
is power efficient. A disadvantage is that data loss can occur.

Backup
What is the definition of Backup? backup is where a bit of data gets lost and it produces another copy of data.

What is the difference between Backup and Backing Storage? A backup is a secondary file and backing storage is
USB sticks.

Give two reasons why backups should be used/made

Because they can be useful for when data gets lost and malicious actions.
