about the insects. Students will be able to explain to their peers what a ladybug is
and share facts about them. Students will recognize that Ladybugs can be found all
over the world and be able to recognize that there are many different species. And

Materials Needed:
Power point Presentation
Computer
Projector
Red and black construction paper
Brads
Markers
Black pipe cleaners
Glue
Scissors

Pre-Lesson: Before the activity we will discuss Ladybugs and look at a ladybug
power point that includes information about Ladybugs appearance, life cycles and
mannerisms.
Examples of pre activity questions we can ask include: Do all ladybugs look alike?
What colors do they come in? About how many kinds do you think you might find in
one place?
Teach vocabulary words by showing pictures on a powerpoint and discussing the
pictures as a class. Introduce the face that Bio/diversity means Bio=life and
diversity = many different kinds. So biodiversity means many different kinds of life.

Activity: Taking the tools we have in our materials pile students will make ladybugs
that will be able to open their wings and share facts. Students will first build the
ladybug and then write an interesting fact on the inside, under the ladybugs wings.
This project will be put on display for the entire class and parents to see.

The students fact will be written on the Ladybugs abdomen underneath the
moveable wings. This activity will require students to choose their favorite fact
about ladybugs in order to put a fact on the abdomen. Engage in discussion with the
class on observing particular ladybugs look: identify body parts; colors of wings,
head, antenna; color, size, shape, number and placement of spots. Then compare to
other ladybugs.

Vocabulary that we will focus on are: Pronotum, Elytra, Rare, Common, Native,
Introduced, Biodiversity, Abdomen and Conservation

Rationale for this lesson: To teach children about ladybugs and their life cycles,
parts of their bodies, what they eat and how they live. Students will be able to
identify a ladybug and demonstrate knowledge about the insects. Students will be
able to explain to their peers what a ladybug is and share facts about them. Students
will recognize that Ladybugs can be found all over the world and be able to
recognize that there are many different species. And recognize important
characteristics.
