Method Statement on Cased Auger / Cable Percussion Drilling
Borehole advancement begins with the use of a cased auger/cable percussion drilling method to
penetrate the surface soils. In the same way as the traditional Shell & Auger system (tripod rigs),
different down hole drilling tools are employed to advance the borehole, depending on the nature of the
geology.

In cohesive sediments (clays/silts/silty or clayey sands), cohesive fill or in strata in the unsaturated
zone, penetration is achieved with the use of a solid stem auger tool.

This auger is rotated and

advanced into the subsurface by the drill head on the mast of the rig through a temporary steel casing
(168mm, 219mm or 324mm OD). This casing is advanced simultaneously to the advancement of the
auger by a hydraulically powered rotating table unit positioned between the drill head and the base
clamp on the mast of the machine. The flight of the solid stem auger is 2m in length, so every 2m
interval (or less if in-situ geotechnical testing is to be performed during borehole advancement) the
auger is raised to the surface and the drilling returns collected as samples for testing or as spoil for

ZtzDK^'K/E
Z^D>d

K

> DZ>

W ^E&h&ZtzDK^'K/E

disposal. Borehole advancement is achieved by the addition of rods to the auger tools through the
required depth range.

On encountering non-cohesive sediments, usually in the saturated zone, the borehole is advanced with
the use of cable percussion techniques. A steel shell/bailer with a non-return valve (steel or leather
depending on the grain size distribution of the sediments) at the end is attached to the end of a steel
cable which travels over the top of the mast to a winch located in the main body of the machine. This
shell is gradually lowered (not by free fall) to the base of the borehole where it is repeatedly
mechanically lowered and raised in a percussive action until it is full of the non-cohesive material
(sand/sands and gravels/cobbles). The shell is raised to the surface where its load is emptied before
returning to the base of the borehole for refilling.

As this cable percussive drilling proceeds the temporary steel casing is simultaneously advanced by the
rotating action of the casing table to prevent collapse of the borehole walls and the potential cross
contamination between different water bearing strata.

Method Statement on Dynamic Penetration Tests
The Dynamic Penetration Test (DPT) is an in-situ dynamic penetration test designed to provide
information on the geotechnical engineering properties of a soil. This is a dynamic load test that uses a
dynamic sounding technique to calculate the loading capacity and compaction properties of the soil. The
test is used in situ, inter alia to control the compaction of backfills and embankments.
DPTs can be used to control soil compaction, the dynamic penetration test is perfect for embankments,
pavements, road surfaces and other projects that need backfilling. The test allows us to easily locate
and examine the extent of soft spots below the surface that need treating. It can also be carried out
under water for projects that require knowledge of the loading capacity of the sea bed.
Between the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and the Dynamic Penetration Test (DPT) in sandy
material exists an empirical equivalence. Penetration resistance values from the two tests are often
taken as equivalent for design purposes. When examine SPT and DPT resistance values from different
geological depositional and weathering environments, it is apparent that energy losses are greater in
the DPT test than in the SPT, leading to higher resistance values in the former. The SPT is carried out
within a borehole, whereas the DPT is continuously driven into the soil. The dynamic force applied to
the DPT rods causes soil to fill the small air annulus around the rods, exerting a frictional resistance.
The different geological settings of a test site will reveal that, although different factors cause the
friction, the equivalence varied in a similar manner.
The probe, equipped with a cone tip is driven into the ground by a 10-50 kilogram weight dropped freely
from a height of 50 centimetres. The number of blows for penetrations per 10-20 centimetre layer is
registered and converted into an average penetration per stroke. The data gathered is used to calculate
the Californian bearing ratio for each depth of soil internationally recognized measurement for the
load-bearing capacity of soils used for roads, pavements and airstrips. To evaluate the density and
consistency empirical relations are used, developed in America and Germany. In near shore conditions
we will apply additional casings to pass the water column [from barge to seafloor] and to prevent rod
damage. These casings will be lowered in previously placed drill pipes.

In this case the dynamic penetration tests (DPTs) will be performed as continuous Dynamic Probing
Heavy DPH15. For these DPTs a falling weight of 50 kg is used at a falling height of 0,50 m. The area

W ^E&h&ZtzDK^'K/E

of the cone used is 1500 mm2. The N-values have been measured during the testing phase and are an
indication for the quality of the subsoil layers. It is noted that Barway - MOSGEO presents the results
as N10-values.
