PA State Standards:
2.1.1.F: Select the appropriate operation (addition or subtraction) to solve problems.
2.2.1.A: Apply concepts of addition and subtraction to solve problems up to ten.
2.2.1.B: Demonstrate strategies for addition and subtraction in order to solve single- and double-digit
addition and subtraction problems.
INTASC Standards:
1.36: The teacher can create interdisciplinary learning experiences that allow students to integrate
knowledge, skills and methods of inquiry from several subject areas.
2.11: The teacher understands how learning occurshow students construct knowledge, acquire skills
and develop habits of mindand knows how to use instructional strategies that promote student
learning.

Instructional Objective(s):
1. Students will be able to subtract single digit numbers up to the number 5.
2. Students will be able to incorporate music in to the study of subtraction.

Anticipatory Set/Motivation:
Does anyone know what subtraction means? When do we use subtraction? Why is subtraction
important? I will demonstrate how to do subtraction with these Popsicle sticks. I will begin by holding a
set number of Popsicle sticks in my hand and will model taking one away. I will do this repeatedly to
show the concept of subtraction.

Day 1
Students will be asked what prior knowledge they have of subtraction
Students will observe the teacher demonstrating subtraction
Teacher will provide several examples of subtraction using a PowerPoint presentation
Day 2
Students will listen to and watch 5 Speckled Frogs song
Students will sing along with the 5 Speckled Frogs song
Students will play musical lilly pads (musical chairs) demonstrating subtraction
Students will practice subtraction using a worksheet

Adaptations and Accommodations:


1. Students with visual or hearing disabilities can sit in the front of the class so they can see the
PowerPoint and YouTube video easily.
2. The activity will be given in an accommodating room so that every student in the class feels
comfortable.
3. Instructions will be given to the students in a loud, clear manner so that everyone can hear and
understand.
4. Students with disabilities will be given extra help and attention to assist them on finishing their
craft.

Closure:
Can someone tell me what it means to subtract? What is one use of subtraction that makes it
important? I will give the students a homework assignment on subtraction.

Assessment:
For objective one: Students will complete worksheet in class on subtraction.
For objective two: Students will learn a song that demonstrates subtraction.

Assignment
1. Student will be asked to bring in a small plastic bag or envelope filled with up to 10 small items
that can be used for counting. Students will use these objects to demonstrate subtracting in
class.
