cooperating teacher for review and a signature before you teach your lesson.

Goal(s):

Pre-assess:

F.8.1 Conduct research and inquiry on self-selected or assigned topics, issues, or

problems, and use an appropriate form to communicate their findings.
Formulate research questions and focus investigation on relevant and accessible
sources of information
Use multiple sources to locate and identify information pertinent to research
including.various electronic search engines
Observed students working on a prior research project and noticed some things that they
could work on such as how to narrow your reasearch topic, find credible information, and
the importance of not plagiarizing and citing sources.
Explain and use effective researching techniques
Explain and demonstrate knowledge of Plagiarism and Bibliography
Demonstrate how to put together a research project with bibliography

Objective(s):
:
Assessment:

Informal: Use note-taking technique to note each students abilities/needs and

understanding as they participate in the discussion and while working on research and
powerpoints.
Formal: Students will have a rubric to go along with the project and presentation, and will
spend more time on a research project. Since the students havent had much experience
with research techniques and are not too familiar with what plagiarism and bibliography
are, I would do a formal assessment after they have had this practice.

(Include time allotments)
Introduction: 10 minutes
Connect back to prior research project: remember your decade research projects? I think they were
great, but we could learn some research techniques for future projects that will make research easier. What

techniques do you already use? Make a list together of steps of research.

Narrow your topic (15 mins) before you begin researching: what information are you looking for? Make
sub-topics for more narrow and specific information. Main Points Ex) Researching Sports.lots of info?
What info do you need/not need? After narrowing your topic, you can research online using a search
enginewhat search engines do you use? Are they useful? How do you know?
When you type in your search, what information are you getting? Too much? Not enough? Reliable?
What makes research reliable?? Talk and make lists
Skim results for your main points
*Keep a list of the websites you used information from
What to do with info you found on your topic? (5)What kinds of things were you doing for your
century research? Copy/paste? Paraphrase? Important not copy others work.
Called Plagiarism (5) What is it? Why is it bad? How to avoid? Paraphrasing Examples and Quotes
Bibliography (10) Have you ever been told to cite your sources? Means that you cite or make a list
at the end of your paper or project that tells the readers where you got your information. Not only
makes your work credible but also ensures your arent plagiarizing.
Review main points talked about and what learned thats new. Questions? (5)
Use the rest of the time to do your own mini-research project on your favorite person in history
o Use note sheet to make sure you narrow your topic, find credible sources, paraphrase,
and create a bibliography
o I will come around to help
o

Strategies for students requiring additional assistance: {use the information you gathered during the
pre-assessment process} I will work more closely with some students that I know have more trouble
with these projects and I will keep a close eye on the students that I know use work time to talk or goof
off instead

Closure: Students will talk with me about their ideas, research, design, and understanding of new
terms. No formal assessment, if so, would include a rubric and more specific criteria.
