Ball Skills

Basketball lesson 6

Teacher: Mr. Richardson

Class length: 60 Mins

Grades k-5

# of students: 20-30
School: Waterloo

Entry of Gym and Explanation of Activities (2 Minutes)

Students will enter the gym silently and walk to their Squad Spot. They should sit
straight down without sliding. Students will sit crisscrossed while you explain the days
activities.
Behaviors- Give three strikes to students who do not sit quietly or crisscrossed.
On their third strike, they are to sit crisscrossed in the corners with their back against the
brick wall. When you have time ask them why they are there and if they are ready to
participate according to the gym rules. If they are, you may send them back into the
activity. Please direct any major problems to the vice principals office.
Safety- Use your judgment with regards to appropriate shoes. Normally, if the
shoes have a rubber sole, I will allow the child to participate. Open toe shoes and slippers
are not safe and students should sit out with their backs against the wall next to the office.

Waterloo Wildcat: (5 minutes)

Object: Improve cardio-respiratory endurance & develop ability to pace consistently
during a run
How to Play:
Walk down the sidewalk to the field. Students run as many laps as they can in the
5-10 minutes available to them. The goal is to continuously move at a consistent pace
during the run.
Rules:
1. Students must go around the cones, no cutting corners.
2. Students must stay on their feet.
3. No tag games, must keep self to self.
4. Students must either walk or run, they may not completely stop.
5. When the whistle blows, students line up at the blue gym doors.

Sideline Basketball (20 minutes)

Equipment: Jerseys for the students, a basketball
Object: To utilize basketball skills (passing & shooting) in a dynamic
environment
How to Play:
There are two teams. Each team lines up on opposite sidelines to the basketball
court. 5 players come out to the court from each team at a time. Players may not dribble
and may not travel. To move the ball, they may only pass. They may pass to players on
the court or to players on their sideline. Defensive players may only intercept passes and
may not take balls from the hands of an offensive player.
Sideline players may move left and right, but may not move on to the court and
may not move when they are holding the ball. All normal basketball rules(fouls,
traveling, out of boundsetc) are enforced at normal.
After a point is scored, and after a few minutes has gone by, a new set of 5 players
comes out to play as the players on the court move to the sideline. Everyone must have
had an opportunity to play before anyone may play twice.

Line Up and Exit Gym (2-3 minutes)

Have the students put away their balls, and then walk to line up. Students will be
lined up on the red line closest to the door exiting the gym. Students should be standing
quietly with hands to their sides and heads facing forward. At this time, give the class a
BEST BUCK if the class has behaved well. Students do not leave the gym until the entire
class is lined up correctly. Wait for them if necessary.
Closing Questions:
1) Name the three passes we practiced
2) Recall the cues for the chest-pass
3) Recall the cues for the bounce-pass
4) Recall the cues for the overhead-pass
