Motor Show Info Sheet - Mercedes C43 AMG (1998)

First car assembled entirely by AMG (C36 predecessor left production line as a C280)
267 registered in UK (down from 387 in 2001, according to www.howmanyleft.co.uk)
4.3 Litre V8, 302 BHP, 302 lb-ft
0-60 MPH in 5.8 sec, limited to 155MPH (168MPH without limiter)
AMG-bits: Engine, gearbox, brakes, exhaust, suspension, front seats, wheels, bodykit (rest is standard C-class)

Good Stuff: Reliable engines, stainless exhaust from factory, easy to work on, most parts common to standard C class
(so fairly cheap and readily available 2nd hand)
Bad Stuff: Prone to rust (restored in 2011), propensity for gearbox leaks leading to total failure if not caught. AMG
parts can be tricky to source (front discs took 3 months to arrive).
Interesting Stuff: 16 spark plugs, CANBus Electrics, Orthopedic seats (inflatable lumber/bolsters), asymmetric front
brake discs (vents angled forwards on both sides).
Costs: Cheap to buy (4k for sound/low mileage, 6.5k restored). 25MPG (better than most expect). Cheap classic
insurance.
Driving Experience: Handling entirely average by modern standards, and auto gearbox likes to change up
frustratingly early. Brakes and engine still strong though.

Front Passenger Door Control Unit Replacement (3/10/12)

Front passenger wing mirror & window stopped working on 19/8/12. Both stopped working at same time, so not the
motors. Tried:
Swapping out fuses (7 & 8 Front, 3 Rear)
Disconnecting/re-connecting negative battery terminal (to reset the canbus, googling mentioned rear
window control modules getting wet can cause fronts to pack up, and can be temporarily fixed by the reset)
Using the key fob convenience feature to wind down the windows - worked for all windows except the
passenger front, so not the switches inside the car
Asked MB&B to take a look whilst doing the MoT on 25/9/12. They confirmed that the NSF Door Control Unit (part
No. A 210 820 77 26, 148 from Inchcape) had no CANBus connection, and that disconnecting the battery usually
makes it work for a while/re-establish comms, but its completely dead on mine.
Got them to replace the passenger front door control unit on 3/10/12 (220.80 fitted).

De-Cat (1/6/12)
Did a lot of research, but decided to go for the de-cat from Olly at PCS - who runs a C43 himself, and had already sold
30 pipes to very happy customers. This removes the rear 2 cats and middle resonator box, but leaves the from 2 cats
and rear silencer as standard. The system is full stainless with lovely welding.
Whilst fitting, he advised a return trip for the following (returned later - all work now done):
Replace exhaust bolts to the front exhaust (requires heat/time)
Replace one of the front claps - Olly snapped the stainless clamp and so fitted a temporary one
Think the rear clamp was also temporary (my original was knacked, he showed it me)
Gearbox weep (circa 200). Has never actually dripped onto the garage floor.

Drivers Side Wing Mirror Motor Replacement (19/4/12)

When I bought the car, the drivers side wing mirror glass was more wobbly than the passenger side, and I originally
feared it might drop out at some point, so took it apart.
Good video on how to get the wing mirror cover off at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DZL72RBEjg&feature=related
Basically bend the mirror forward toward the front of the car (its on a spring), and then use a screwdriver to lever
the chrome clip inside forward this releases the housing.
The glass is attached to a backing plate via a sprint clip which runs across the back of the mirror at the top. This was
fine/secure. The backing plate then attached to the motor in 3 places. There are 2 metals screws (which actually act
as the adjuster worm screws) at 9 and 12 oclock. The 3rd attachment is a clip in lug in the centre of the mirror. This
is the one which wasnt clipping in very tightly and leading to the wobble. In fact, it was quite easy to prise up the
bottom right hand part of the mirror and pop it out. However, the wing mirror couldn't go anywhere as it was held
by the 2 metal screws fairly securely. Lived with it for a while.
Replaced motor in drivers side wing mirror with parts from a complete, 2nd hand unit on 19/4/12 (cost 24).

Alarm Siren Replacement (16/4/12)

Bought replacement siren after a number of false alarms, but then realised it was probably due to the main car
battery running flat. Fitted anyway, whilst garage had wheel arch liner out to replace sheared retainers (old siren
looked fine).
Alarm siren contains backup battery (confirmed, as my alarm went off after I disconnected the main battery) which
runs flat and is subject to corrosion. Located in front wheel arch liners, but not sure if in front or behind wheel.
According to EPC:
Siren - Part Number: A 220 820 28 26 (See below)
Location: Behind arch liner, Passenger side, Toward front of car.
An eBay advert reckoned that "220 820 28 26 which goes to A 203 820 38 26 then on to A 171 820 25 26 ands up at
A 219 820 32 26. All do the same job and fit in the same place".
Inchape (4/1/12) - "A2198203226 (97.92) is the correct part number for the alarm siren now. Our system also
suggests ordering a new wiring loom A2035405108 (23.87) & insulation A0009838910 (5.45). The alarm wiring
harness is longer than the original one in order for the siren to be moved away from the risk of water penetration."

Front & Rear Brake Disc/Pad Replacement (16/4/12)

Fitted rear discs and pads myself, and noticed split piston seal on rear, passenger side caliper, so sent that away for
reconditioning and then fitted that too. Had front discs and pads fitted by MB&B (hacked off with how long it was
taking me).
For info, the rear caliper is shared with the SL600, which is more common. There were no new calipers in the UK or
Germany (as per the front discs, which took 3 months to arrive). Also tried buying a reconditioned caliper, but they
sent caliper for wrong side (suspect Mercedes info lists it as leading caliper, not trailing), and then didn't have one
for the other side.
Noticed brake judder shortly after coming back from restoration. Assumed corrosion, so continued driving for a
month, but didnt change. Took to MB&B, who were certain that one of the discs was warped, due to having been
stood around for a month/collecting condensation/rusting from inside. However, they quoted 663 for front
discs/pads (discs are 213 each from Mercedes), and 200 for the rear. They couldnt tell if the fronts or rears were
warped though. Advised it would be about 100 labour for fitting if I could source parts elsewhere.
Proved impossible to get front discs which were the right size (lots of websites say they fitted, but 316mm, not
334mm). And the other aftermarket parts weren't much cheaper than OEM. Came close to trying 330mm front discs
from E430 4matic, but couldn't find any evidence of it having been tried before, and Inchcape refused to advise.

Info on OEM kit from web - rear discs :

300mm Diameter, 22mm Thick, 5 fixing holes, 19.4mm Min Thickness, 55.5mm High, 67mm Centering
Diameter, Ventilated.
Front discs:
334mm Diameter x 32mm Thick x 48mm High.
They are asymmetric (i.e. left right are different), meaning its almost impossible to get non OEM parts.
Apparently the vanes inside the vents face forward to pull air in.
They are also fitted to W210 E55 (confirmed) and W208 CLK55 (not confirmed).
Closest confirmed alternative is the C230K Sport discs, which are 330 x 28 x 47 they are thinner, but people
have confirmed fitting these with no probs on the web.
E430 330mm (sport/4matic option?) discs look a better spec (330 x 32 x 47), but cant find any confirmed
reports as to whether they work.
Inchcape (4/1/12) - "Unfortunately we have no way of advising if you can use discs & pads from a different
model."

Update (18/10/12): Horgantrevor tried the E430 discs - had to add 2 x 1.5 washers between the carrier and
calipers but sounds OK. See http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/wheels-tyres/133343-c43-discs-question2.html#post1573267

In terms of aftermarket pads, EBC Redstuff are recommended by Olly and a few others (better than green or yellow).
Some say grabby at low speed, some say ceramic wears discs more, all say much better for brake dust. Not much
cheaper than OEM pads though.
Emails To/from Inchcape to work out brake part numbers/cost:
Me (3/1/12): My car is a 1998 C43, chassis WDB2020332F730902...I need new discs/pads all round - the garage has
told me a judder is due to warping but are unable to tell which disc is the culprit. The C43 front discs cost a fortune
(233 EACH on your site), and I dont think I need AMG levels of braking with the way I use the car. Internet research
indicates that the E430 4matic discs, though not asymmetric like the AMG discs, are identical in size (330 x 32 x 47),
and are way cheaper. I would not ask you to underwrite their performance/safety, but do they appear to be
interchangeable?
Inchcape (andrew.loft@ir.inchcape.co.uk): Unfortunately we have no way of advising if you can use discs & pads
from a different model. However we can offer an additional discount of20% on top of the following prices (which
include VAT):
FrontDiscs A2104211812 & A2104211912 224.64 each
Pads A0034202120 135
Wear sensor A2105401117 5.59
RearDiscs A2104230812 42.98 each
Pads A0044209320 45.14
Me (5/1/12): Thanks very much. I'd go for it with that discount, but have another follow-up query on the part
numbers you quoted - sorry! I subscribe to the EPC, and was also given part numbers by the garage who diagnosed
the warped discs. We all agree on the front/back disc and wear sensor part numbers, but you've quoted different
part numbers for the front/back pads. Could I just double check?
Front Pads - EPC/Garage reckon H WA 2104200120, you quoted A0034202120 (the inchcape website says
this is for E430 pads)
Rear Pads - EPC/Garage reckon A 0034204820, you quoted A0044209320 (the inchcape website says this is
for brake SHOES rather than pads, and for an E-class)
Inchcape: The part numbers you quote for the pads change part number to those we gave which are the latest
version of them. Hopefully of some help.

Key Fob Case Replacement (18/10/11)

Consensus seemed to be that key programming has to be done by factory. But fob case replacement is possible.
Battery on old fob was getting low (refused to work a couple of times), and was pretty scratched up, so bought new
key off ebay (35, genuine MB), and then transferred inner circuit board across as per instructions below (18/10/11).
Note that a Sony car stereo removal tool was perfect tool for the job.

However, then noticed that fob had a picture of a van, rather than a car boot, on boot release button. So swapped
innards back to original key. Subsequently bought new fob case, which turned out to be an non-OEM copy. Finally
got new proper key months later.

From: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=43399
Q: If I bought a new key fob is it possible i can change all the inners to the new fob?
A: Yes it comes out of the case by putting a thin knife inbetween the case and the nylon strip, and release the catch
as in the picture, and it all slides out.

Question
Could you take lots of photos of it looking shotblast and shabby it would be a nice addition to the service record, to
show the work has been done thoroughly (there are a lot of bodged C43s around - I think I viewed most of them
before buying this one!).

Rust behind both front arches where they meet bumper
Small patch on outside of roof rail near drivers door
2 dents on drivers side rear quarter panel, near spot of rust Id seen (can prob be tapped out at same time)
Quote for doing the lot was 1190+VAT.
The quote includes:
Remove both side skirts, front bumper, roof moulding strips and windscreen (latter may not be necessary if
top seal comes out without windscreen, but this is unlikely).
Both rear arches/rear door shut areas: Shot blast, treat, prime all rusty areas. Repaint and re-lacquer whole
panel.
Passenger side rear door: Shot blast, treat, prime all rusty areas. Repaint and re-lacquer whole panel.
Both front wings: Shot blast, treat, paint all rusty areas. Re-lacquer whole panel.
Roof: Shot blast, treat, paint all rusty areas. Sort crazed lacquer in front of sunroof. Re-lacquer whole panel.
Drivers side rear quarter panel: Shot blast, treat, paint all rusty areas. Re-lacquer whole rear quarter panel.
Windscreen re-fitting costs not included in quote, but will work with my insurer if it breaks (Admiral confirmed that
my insurance will cover accidental breakage by garage, as long as I use their preferred windscreen company, and pay
75 XS).
Booked in for 12/9/11, when David gets back off holiday (so he can oversee work).
Section overleaf was given to David prior to quote, and kept by him.

Paint Code (Ive bought touch up pens using this, and they match):
From Mercedes Datacard: 199 - black pearl (blue-black)
Quality/Cost:
Im a sh*tpicking perfectionist, and WILL notice/hate every single blemish/patch of orange-peel. So Id like a
quote for an invisible job, rather than a budget one (other than perhaps inside the arches).
On the other hand, its a 4K car - Im not about to spend 10K on a bare metal restoration. So Im happy to pay
a few quid for time taken to do a thorough quote (in case I dont proceed with the work).
Basically, it looks great at the mo, so Id rather do nothing/enjoy it for a year or two and sell it, than end up
with a cut-price/patchwork mess. But if I can get on top of it now without breaking the bank, Id love to keep
it until the mechanicals give up.

Wiper Lubrication (4/8/11)

See: http://www.202tech.com/howto/wiper.html
I just removed the turtle cover, and checked there it seemed well greased already. The upper and turtle covers
are attached by lugs to the left and right sides, and just pull upward.
Also, if it needs full mechanism attention: http://members.lycos.nl/mbenz/windshield_wiper.htm
And some full 3-stage repair notes: http://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w202/292373-complete-windshield-wiperdiagnostics-repair-instructions.html
From another site:
There seems to be several methods (for some unknown reason) by which the large 'turtle shell' cover is attached.
Mine unfortunately hasn't got the tabs but is secured by a screw from underneath, which would necessitate
complete removal of the unit to remove it. I got round this the lazy way by drilling a 3/8 hole in the cover and
squirting in spray grease, then just put a rubber grommet in the hole. Doesn't look too obtrusive.
From another site:
The whole mechanism was lacking is adequate lubrication. This includes the parts you cannot access by just
removing the wiper actuator cover. Because the system had started to cease up, the spindle of the wiper motor had
sliped on the linkage and so the blade was now parking in the wrong place.
What you need to do is as follows:
1. Raise the bonnet to its fully upright position. There is a catch on each bonnet hinge to do this.
2. Remove the 2 piece plastic trim at the bottom of the screen either side of the blade actuator.
3. Remove the retaining screws holding the second layer of one piece plastic trim and release the clips on the front
edge to remove the trim complete. This is quite fiddley.
4. Now you have access to the wiper mechanism which is held in place with one bolt, two nuts and a plastic clip.
5. Unplug the electric cable and remove the assembly complete.
6. The wiper motor should be in its parked position so try not to move its position. Undo the retaining nut on the
spindle and you will probably see, as I did that the knarled end of the spindle has slipped within the first 5cm
long linkage arm. To fix this, clean out the metal filings, ensure the wiper blade is in its parked position and reassemble making sure the linkage arm is tapped into place and the nut well tightened to prevent further
slippage.
7. Now you need to take apart, clean and lubricate everything you can get at.
8. Put it all back together and if you have set the blade properly, it will work and park as good as new.

Bluetooth Handsfree Kit Removal (July 2011)

Car arrived with disconnected Sony Ericsson HCB-30 Handsfree kit (control panel just visible inside centre console,
microphone disconnected from unit, no trace of speaker feed to unit thought there are screw holes in footwell
where it night have been mounted).
Bought spare unit (control panel damaged on mine) and kit to wire into stereo speakers (rather then using dedicated
speaker). However, then spotted that new stereos have this lot built in, so ditched idea.
The fact that new stereos also have Bluetooth built in may also explain 2nd mic fitted to headlining my guess is that
is was attached to the stereo Mark Ebbon took out, and the wire will be dangling behind the stereo.
Removed the lot when new stereo was fitted.

A Pillar Trim Removal (July 2011)

Needed to remove this when fitting stereo (to remove 2 old mics that were installed near the rear view mirror, 1 of
which had its wire cut off just under the dash as its turns out).
The rubber door seal pull off fairly easily with no damage. The A pillar trim basically pulls off, but toward the centre
of the car, parallel to the windscreen. Think there were 3 clips, and maybe a lug at the top which fits under the roof
lining. Check photos taken at the time. Its a bit of a fiddle to refit, because you cant really see when the clips are
lined up you have to feel for it and they move around.
Information gathered prior to attempt included below.
From: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/interior/54054-interior-trim.html
I dont know what year a 51 plate is but if it is a W202 (before 2000) start at the bottom of the trim panel, release
the door rubber seal that overlaps the trim panel, get your fingertips underneath and pull the panel outwards and
towards yourself, working your way to the top, as you progress upwards 3 metal clips will pop, when you get to the
top pull downwards to unhook a plastic clip.
Some of the 3 metal clips that secure the panel to the pillar will remain attached inside of the removed panel and
some may remain on the pillar.
-

Thanks for your help.

Vin number begins wdc203 so I assume its a 203, first reg Nov 2001.
The removal was as you described with a couple of slight changes - start from top to bottom and pull upwards, away
from dash, to unhook the plastic clips (2 off).

Windows/Sunroof: Re-Syncing/Re-Normalising
Whenever the battery is disconnected, the windows/sunroof reputedly need re-syncing/re-setting/re-normalising.
The owners manual mentions it for the windows, but not the sunroof. However, when you tilt the sunroof up, let go
of the button, then push to tilt it up again and hold it there is a click.
Now, I cant be sure if this did anything. But...
When I picked up car after condenser replacement, they reported that I probably already knew but my sunroof
wont shut properly, and that the switch probably needs replacing.
It seemed to tilt up OK, so I tried the trick, and then untilted, opened and closed it again, and all seemed fine. Dont
know if that has anything to do with normalising, but there are lots of google reports about the sunroof needing to
be normalised (via various different means, and sometimes repeatedly to make it stick).

But then got hacked off, and bought 1 years access to the official EPC: http://service-parts.mercedes-benz.com/
Then ordered from: http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk/index.php

Annex C: Climate Control Panel Diagnostics

A good way to check for sure is this. Leave the car parked over night. Go to the car and turn the ignition on, without
firing the engine. Run the self diagnostic routine on the air con pushbutton control panel and check the evaporator
temperature reading. If the sensor is faulty, you will have a logically impossible value:
1. Turn ignition on (without firing engine)
2. Set the air con temp to 72 deg F or 22 deg C
3. Press "REST" for more than 6 seconds
4. The left side of the display will alternately display "01" (which is the test number) and the cabin interior
temperature (eg 72 deg F or whatever the temp in the car happens to be).
5. Press the fan speed "+" button to advance to the next test (eg "02").
6. The evaporator temperature is test number "05". The working temperature of the evaporator is between 2 deg C
and 12 deg C. Obviously, if your car has been left overnight and has not been started, the value returned should be
consistent with the ambient exterior temperature. If the evaporature temperature sensor is broken it will return a
logically inconsistent value, e.g 40 deg C.
The part is a very quick and easy change. I would try it before spending $500 on something the mechanic "thinks"
might fix it.
The other tests on the push button control unit are great:
01: in car temp sensor
02: outside temp sensor
03: heater core temp sensor
05: evap temp sensor
06: ECT temp sensor
07: refrigerant pressure meassured in BAR
08: refrigerant temp sensor
21: engine speed
22: vehicle speed
There are loads more.
