Historical Figure Presentation

Education:

Catherine was home schooled

until the age of ten. Then she was sent to
private schools.
Historical Time Period: Cult of Domesticity

Catherine

Beecher through self study she

learned the subjects not offered in schools
for young ladies.
By May of 1824, she opened a private school
for young ladies in Hartford, Connecticut.
Known as the Hartford Female Seminary,
which taught higher branches of learning.

Catherine

Beecher developed the Beecher

System. The Beecher Systems purpose was
to develop a system of appropriate female
activities.
Activities for the Beecher System: Archery,
Swimming, Horseback Riding, Calisthenics
done to music, and Calisthenics using light
weights.

Beecher

created a system of 26 lessons in

philosophy and two calisthenics with light
exercise, all designed to correspond to the
light assumption prevalent at the time the
programs for men were to vigorous for
women and required too much strength.

Beecher

wanted to promote exercise and to

live a healthier life style.
She wanted to teach women that women can
do activities to promote them to be more
healthy and active.
Catherine wanted to teach fun and new
activities that women would interested in
learning.

agree with Catherine Beecher. I think

developing the Beecher System was a great
idea for women. Especially, in the early
1800s women did not get a lot of
opportunities to do these activities.
I would use the Beecher System in my
philosophy because the activities can really
be enjoyable for all young women.
