Question 1 (PO5, CO2)

A laboratory scale batch reactor which operates isothermally has produced ethylene glycol
(MW=62 kg/kmol) from the mixing of 600 ml of a 2.5 M solution of ethylene oxide I water
with 600 ml of water. The reaction is first-order with respect to ethylene oxide. Assuming the
concentration of water is constant during the course of the reaction, the concentration of
ethylene glycol is recorded as a function of time as given in the following table.

Use an appropriate method to determine the rate constant, k of the reaction.

Question 2 (PO5, CO2)

For the liquid phase reacting C2H4 + H2O C2H5OH which is carried out isothermally in a
flow reactor. The two feeds stream to the reactor mix at 310K to form a single feed stream
that is equal molar in C2H4 and H2O before entering a 250 dm3 CSTR that can be operated at
350 K. Determine the conversion occurs at the CSTR.
Given that at 310K, k=0.05 dm3/mol.min, E=85,000 J/mol.K, CA0= CB0=2.5 mol/dm3 and
A0= B0=6 mol/dm3

Question 3 (PO1, CO1)

volume batch reactor.

a) Using the differential method (numerical method), determine the reaction order with
respect to benzene and its specific reaction rate constant.
b) Setup a stoichiometric table for this chemical reaction.
c) Taking the activation energy, E as 13,350 cal/mol, express the rate law as a function of
conversion, if this reaction is taking place in reaction temperature of 100 C.

Question 4 (PO1, CO1)

The stoichiometric reaction of reactants A and B is as follows:
A+BC+D
The liquid-phase reaction is first order with respect to A and B. The rate constant, k, of this
reaction is equal to 0.0017 m3/kmolmin at 188oC with an activation energy, E, of 47,166
kJ/kmol. The initial entering concentrations of A and B are 1.8 and 6.6 kmol/m3, respectively.
Given the universal gas constant, R, as 8.314 kJ/kmolK.
a) Set up a stoichiometric table for this reaction and express -rA, in terms of conversion (XA).
b) Calculate the initial rate of reaction (XA = 0) at 188oC and 25oC.
