Why do I have to learn about quadratic functions and factoring?

To write with scientific notation (working with very large and very small numbers)
To calculate volumes of solids involving algebraic expressions
To model complex situations with cubic, quartic, etc functions
To determine whether a pattern shows a linear, quadratic, cubic, etc relationship
