INTRODUCTION
Harmonics

What is the need for eliminate the

harmonics?

MULTILEVEL inverters
high power ratings and high quality
output waveforms

Modulation methods
1.sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PWM)
2.space-vector PWM

Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE)

method
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)

POWER TOPOLOGY OF
CASCADE
MULTILEVEL INVERTER

(a) Topology of a single-phase cascaded inverter. (b)

Staircase output phase voltage.

Advantage of topology is
modulation,
control,
protection requirements.
Number of output-phase-voltage levels in a
cascade multilevel inverter : 2s + 1
s is the number of separated DC sources

Cascaded inverters can be connected in Y or .

HARMONIC-ELIMINATION
PROBLEM WITH NONEQUAL DC
SOURCES

Fourier series analysis

Number of harmonics which can be

eliminated from the output voltage of the
inverter is s 1.

PSO

The sociological behavior which is

modeled in the PSO system
The individuals in the population are
called particles.

Particle is determined by 2 vectors

1. position vector (Xi)
2. velocity vector (Vi)
Xi = [xi1, xi2, . . . , xiD]
Vi = [vi1, vi2, . . . , viD]

The best position of particle Pi,

Pi = [pi1, pi2, . . . , piD]

FORMULATING THE
PROBLEM

1) Get the data for the system

2) Generate the initial conditions of each particle

3) Evaluate the particles

4) Update the personal best position of the

particles obtained from PSO method
5) Update the velocity and position vectors
6) Termination criteria

CONCLUSION
The Particle Swarm Optimization has been
proposed to solve the Selective Harmonic
Elimination problem with nonequal dc
sources in 11-level H-bridge cascaded
multilevel inverters.
