Artifact Reflection Health Promotion Portfolio

University of Wisconsin Platteville

Title of Experience/Artifact:

Tour de Trail Event in Platteville

Date Experience Completed:

Fall 2014

Describe your educational experience/artifact:

For my work sample I helped out with the Tour de Trail event in Platteville. The purpose of this
project was to raise awareness for the Platteville Trail. They are in the process of paving it so it is
accessible for all types of activities. My part in this event was to make a 3 mile boot camp. I had
to make sure the activities I chose were able to be modified depending on experience level. I
also assisted in the designing and promoting of this event.
UW-Platteville Health Promotion Standard Alignment
I believe that the Health Promotion Standard that my work sample showed was diverse learners. The
Health Promotion Standard diverse learners is when the health promoter understands how clients differ in
their approaches to learning and creates a variety of education/training methods that are adapted to
diverse learners. This standard aligns with my work sample because there was a large variety of skill
levels participating in this event. I had to have knowledge on different exercises and ways to modify it.
Some participants in my group were new to exercising. It was my job to teach them the basics and make
sure they were doing it correctly. There was also advanced skill levels in my group. It was my job to
make sure they were doing exercises to align with their skill level in order to get the most out of this
experience and not be bored.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment
This work sample best aligns with KSD1.a demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy. The KSD
demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy is when the candidate displays extensive content
knowledge of his/her subject areas and demonstrates a continuing search for new content knowledge,
resources, and best instructional practices, while understanding client diversity and client misconceptions
and misunderstandings as key to the instruction process. This was also shown by my knowledge and
ability to modify the exercises to fit a variety of skill levels. In order for me to have the participants
receive the most for this event, I had to use resources to help plan a successful event.
Explain what you learned about health promotion from this experience:
From this experience, I learned to be prepared. Before the event I didnt know what skill level of
participants I was going to have. In order for the boot camp to be successful I researched and planned a
variety of exercises. Not only did I have to plan things that could be done on a trail, but I had to make
sure I had an exercise plan that could be done by everyone and give everyone a successful workout.
Explain what you learned about yourself as a prospective health promotion specialist as a result of
this experience:
Throughout this experience I learned the importance of modification. As a health promotion specialist I
will be working with people of all skill levels. It is important for me to know that each person is different
and that you cant apply the same exercise program to everyone. Every client I encounter will be looked
at from a clean slate.
