Climate Change
Throughout the year we experience several climate changes. We have the
four seasons that we face each year which are spring, summer, fall and winter. On
occasions we also experience dire natural hazards such as storms, earthquakes and
tsunamis. For some time now we have been facing a serious problem that is
affecting our atmosphere and may even affect our lives. Due to our lack of caring for
our environment we are now undergoing global warming.
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that traps heat and helps warm
the Earth. Nitrogen, oxygen and argon are the gasses covering the Earth to keep it at
a livable temperature. However in the past years humans have changed the Earths
atmosphere. Manmade chemicals such as gasoline and chemicals used in
refrigerators are causing a serious problem (p 420). These chemicals are getting
trapped and are warming up the Earth substantially this is called the greenhouse
effect. Without the greenhouse effect all the water on Earth would be frozen and we
would all freeze. However the use of these chemicals is warming up the Earth
dramatically causing serious difficulties.
Global warming is causing glacial ice in the ocean to melt therefore causing
the sea level to increase (p 22). The amounts of ice sheets melted in Greenland have
doubled since 1998 (p 427). This can result in flooding of various cities that are

close to the ocean. It is already causing some concern in some islands near the
tropical Pacific Ocean (p 433). The water in the ocean is becoming more acidic
which can be a potential threat to sea life. Global warming can also alter the power
of a storm making it stronger. Droughts, landslides and fires are also affected by
the climate change making them more violent. Since the Earth has become warmer
it is causing more wildfires in the forest. Various species are being forced to migrate
to higher altitudes due to the climate change (p 435). Agriculture worldwide is
being affected as well.
One factor causing global warming is major industries that release CO2 into
the air causing the o-zone layer to weaken sending more UV rays to the earth from
the sun. We all use services from them these factories such as our phones,
computers, televisions and other everyday items. We must reduce our usage of
these items in order to help save our atmosphere. Simple changes can make a huge
difference. For example just by recycling on a daily basis can help. Using less heat
and electricity can also help. Climate change is occurring because of us and we must
all do our part to help stop it.
