Project 6a

I will be teaching this lesson on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 to a fifth grade
class. The Mathematical Content Standards in this lesson are CC.5.NF.4, CC.5.NF 4a,
and CC.5.NF.6. The Mathematical Practice Standards in this lesson are MP.1, MP.2,
MP.3, and MP.6 The concept focus of this lesson is multiplication strategies with
fractions. The objective is that students will be able to compare and apply strategies for
multiplying fractions.
In this lesson, students will practice multiplying fractions by multiplying straight
across and then simplifying the product. Students will also practice simplifying fractions
first, then multiplying across so the product is simplified already. Students will practice
this technique with several examples on their own. They will also solve several story
problems that require them to multiply fractions by simplifying first, then multiplying. At
the end of this lesson, students will complete a short assessment to show what they know
and where they still need support.
